Advantages: Entertaining, Educating, Promotes Conservation
Disadvantages: None!
The Crocodile hunter is pretty much my favourite programme on Television and it is a grave shame not only for fans, but to the planet that Steve Irwin is no longer with us. The point of the show is conservation through exciting education and it attempts to educate those ignorant to the beauty of the traditionally less loves creatures of our planet.
Steve Irwin has a great heart, he really feels for the animals he deals with and in many episodes, show's strong emotion. Whether it be the dieing baby elephant he encounters, or the day his Dog Sui or Crocodile Mary Die, you can tell how deeply he cares for his animals. He follows the motto "Treat your animals and people as you would like to be treated" and I think that's one of the key points to his success with wildlife.
He handles snakes on more or less every episode, often they are the most venomous snakes in the world. In his 40 + years, he had never had a serious envenomation which is more than can be said for most other reptile telvision presenters, proving he is gifted with the ability to safely deal with these animals.
His trademark is of course the Australian Saltwater Crocodile, and he has successfully relocated many "rogue" crocodiles that were otherwise at risk of being killed.
He operated (and his family still do) Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast (Beerwah) in Australia. I have had the pleasure of visiting Australia Zoo and it's absoloutely fantastic, with beautiful enclosures and the healthiest animals you could ever hope to see.
Summary: Watch it.
