Advantages: Fantastic Script and performances
Disadvantages: Too subtle for some
Larry David was the creator of Seinfeld, a master of comedy, following the end of the enormously successful Seinfeld, he created Curb Your Enthusiasm, the idea of the programme, is that Larry David plays Larry David, the creator of Seinfeld, we follow him in his life, although most of the other characters are fictional, Larry is an exaggerated version of himself.
The programme is brilliant, Larry is a fantastic comic creation, paranoid, needy, hilariously incompetent in every area of his life other than his work, he is a walking caricature and a brilliant one. Larry is a moaner, a balder Woody Allen full of issues and worries, but essentially he is a good guy, a selfish, self-obsessed, destructive clumsy good guy.
The show does include real life friends of David such as Ben Stiller, David Schwimmer, Richard Lewis and many others, all again play exaggerated versions of themselves and as with everyone in the episodes Larry manages to upset them all somehow.
The show is set in LA and much comedy is drawn from the crazy nature of that town, people are mocked and Larry's failure to deal with people and situations is sometimes understandable when you consider the ridiculous nature of some of the people he meets, from Gangster rappers to blind people nobodty is exempt from Larry David.
The show is so subtle and funny, what other comedy could build an episode around a man's issue with a crease in his trousers, or bleed stomach achingly funny comedy from a miss-spelling of the word 'Aunt'. The writing is exceptional and Larry is lovably unloveable. The show was universally acclaimed and there were over six series, I haven't managed to catch up with them all yet and have only seen up to series 4 but I thoroughly enjoy the way comedy is drawn from such tiny things, imagine Victor Meldrew on Steroids and your not even half way there.
The supporting cast are superb with Cheryl Hines as his long suffering wife,Jeff Garlin as his long suffering agent and Susie Essman as Jeff's aggressive wife. Cheryl is calm and deals with Larry as only somebody who truly loves him can, she is the only person who really understands him. Jeff is similarly eager to pander to Larry although he is as much sinner as sinned against and gets Larry into a lot of scrapes.
Summary: Larry David is a comedy legend
