Dad's Army is a classic British comedy and one that is very funny and still makes me laugh whenever I see an episode repeated on the TV. It was originally shown on the BBC and now can still be seen occasionally on that channel or the comedy focused cable channels like Dave and UK Gold. It is set during the Second World War and it is based upon a home gurad unit who are located in the sleepy seaside town of Warmington on Sea. A young boy was asked earlier last year why he liked Dad's Army and he replied " it makes me laugh and it's not rude!", ( taken from a t.v. special dedicated to the show). This sums up the appeal of the show. As its set in the war it doesn't age as much as other comedies that are set in the time they were made. Although 40 years old its still repeated on t.v. and still attracts new viewers. Spaning the years 1968-1977 Dad's Army gave some of Britain's aging actors another chance of stardom. The show was so successful it had 9 series and Christmas specials and eventually led to a stage and radio show after the t.v. series had finished. It ... Read the complete review

Dad's Army is one of those comedies that has grown on me as I have gotten older and appreciated it for the quality it is compared with some of the dross they attempt to pass off as comedy these days, I'm thinking Mighty Boosch and Little Britain for a start, utter tosh. Set during the Second World War it is based around the Warmington on Sea Home Guard Division. A collection of old men and shirkers it is led by the pompous town bank manager Captain Mainwaring played by the brilliant Arthur Lowe, his second in command is played by John Le Mesurier a man I never liked and finally there is the panicky Corporal Jones the town butcher played by Clive ... I was introduced to 'Dad's Army' from a fairly young age by my grandfather who loved this series. Since it started being released on DVD I've rushed out to buy each series as soon as I could and rediscovered some of the wonderful episodes I remembered from years ago as well as discovering, to my delight, that there were many, many more wonderful episodes that I'd never seen before. For anyone who is not familiar with the series it is one of the greatest classic British sit-coms ever. It is set during World War Two and based in a fictional seaside town in the southern England called Walmington-on-Sea, which would be the first line of defence in the case of an ... Dad's Army was a British sitcom that aired from 1968 to 1977, and comprised of over 80 episodes. It featured a group of men during the second world war who were unable to be sent abroad to fight and so made up one regiment of the Home Guard. It featured a hotchpotch of characters signed up to defend their country without a say in the matter, but without anything they could really do, with little or no action. The leader of the Home Guard was Captain Mainwaring (pronounced Mannering), and was played magnificently and very Britishly by Arthur Lowe. He looked and played the part perfectly, and was definitely in charge. His number two was Sergeant Wilson, played ... Read the complete review
