Dad's Army was a British sitcom that aired from 1968 to 1977, and comprised of over 80 episodes. It featured a group of men during the second world war who were unable to be sent abroad to fight and so made up one regiment of the Home Guard. It featured a hotchpotch of characters signed up to defend their country without a say in the matter, but without anything they could really do, with little or no action.

The leader of the Home Guard was Captain Mainwaring (pronounced Mannering), and was played magnificently and very Britishly by Arthur Lowe. He looked and played the part perfectly, and was definitely in charge. His number two was Sergeant Wilson, played by John Le Mesurier, a very calm character who just wanted an easy life. Then there were some real characters. There was the eager to please over the top bumbling Lance Corporal Jones, played by the zealous Clive Dunn, and the young naive Pike, played by Ian Lavender, and the overconfident lad about town Private Walker, played by James Beck. There were many other amiable characters, particularly Frazer and Godfrey, and Bill Pertwee played Air Raid Warden Hodge, the nemesis to the guys of the Home Guard.

The show was lovely to watch. The humour was very typical of Britain in the 1960s and 1970s, and much of it is similar to that you might expect in a toned down Carry On film, to give you an idea of the style. There tends to be a comedy of errors in each episode, particularly one where they are captured, and an officer walks up to Pike and demands his name. Mainwaring says, 'Don't tell him, Pike!' Classic. I like watching reruns of this whenever I can. I watched it with my granddad my I was much younger and he was alive, and it reminds me of how much I enjoyed watching it.

Summary: Dad's Army - WW2 comedy
