Advantages: It grows on you
Disadvantages: None
Dad's Army is one of those comedies that has grown on me as I have gotten older and appreciated it for the quality it is compared with some of the dross they attempt to pass off as comedy these days, I'm thinking Mighty Boosch and Little Britain for a start, utter tosh.
Set during the Second World War it is based around the Warmington on Sea Home Guard Division. A collection of old men and shirkers it is led by the pompous town bank manager Captain Mainwaring played by the brilliant Arthur Lowe, his second in command is played by John Le Mesurier a man I never liked and finally there is the panicky Corporal Jones the town butcher played by Clive Dunn.
The comedy timing in this show is superb and Lowe sparkles in the lead role, his pompous attitude is the catalyst for much of the humour, think Frasier Crane but with English style and you have the idea for those who have never seen the show, Lowe is also credited for delivering one of the classic all time comedy lines with the phrase "Don't tell them your name Pike". A classic British comedy and one I still enjoy when it is on the TV, the spin off film is also worth watching as well.
Summary: Great comedy
