Advantages: Dale Winton! Stupid contestants who can't get the clues right, easy questions, only 25 minutes long.
Disadvantages: None
Supermarket Sweep was a game show which was hosted by Dale Winton. It ran from 1992-2001 and then again in 2007 for 60 episodes.
The aim of the game was to collect as much time as possible and then use that time to dash around the Supermarket collecting as many goods as possible.
There were three teams each comprising of two members and sometimes these were couples, friends, workmates or relatives. The couples would all be introduced throughout the first half of the game by Dale and he would tell you their name, occupation etc and sometimes embarrassing or interesting facts about them.
For the first half of the show the teams would answer questions about general knowledge or about food etc and this would help them to build up their time in increments of ten seconds. There was also a game in the first half called the mini sweep where Dale would ask a question, whomever buzzed in with the correct answer would then have 30 seconds to find that item in the store and they would gain some extra time (30 seconds I believe) as well as £25.00 towards their total at the end of the game.
In the second half of the game the teams would be split in to colours (pink, yellow and blue) and then they would each be sent off out in to the Supermarket with their collected amounts of time and then they would have to dash around grabbing as many items as possible. Nothing was to be knocked off shelves and left on the floor or a fine was imposed, the same went for knocking over a cameraman! At the start of the second half Dale would have set challenges such as three or four items from his shopping list or build a pyramid of cans etc and this would earn the teams extra money if they completed the task in it's entirety. There would also be large inflatable objects around the Supermarket and each team could collect one which would have a cash amount between £25-£100 which would be added to their total at the end of the shop.
The winner of the Supermarket Sweep will go on to the final round where one team starts with a clue and one minute and they have to find that item in the Supermarket and then read the second clue etc, there were three clues in total and hidden behind the product which the third clue leads them too they will find £2000 in cash (£5,000 for the later series) and sometimes they would just grab it in time and I would find myself whooping at the TV!
This show was fantastic, Dale is just SO camp in his presenting and some of the mini games they play are just stupid but a great laugh non-the-less! I always wanted to go on Supermarket Sweep but I was too young during the first run of years and I didn't know what about the 2007 series until it was too late!
I would highly recommend catching repeats of this (which are pretty much daily) on Challenge TV as it's just a fantastically camp show and will draw your attention in for the 25 minutes that it runs for.
I am rating this show 5/5 it's got Dale Winton being uber-camp, sometimes dim contestants and very easy questions to keep most people occupied for a little while. My favourite part is definitely the main Supermarket Sweep!
Summary: I would definitely recommend this as great daytime viewing.

- 16/04/09 I sat watching this with a friend over the new year and it had been the first time either of us had watched it in years; we both enjoyed it. If anything it got better with age as we could laugh at almost anything and everything on the show (especially the clothes). |
