Advantages: easy watching

Disadvantages: a bit tacky and they never win

I love watching some game shows as they are normally so tacky but at the same time great easy watching entertainment. One of my all time favourites is Supermarket sweep. The show originally aired on our screens in September 1993 and had 2 series until 2001. They them went on and re branded it in 2007 as Dales Supermarket sweep. It was originally aired on ITV and now you can see re runs of it on Challenge TV, although it's not currently showing them at the moment but watch this space!


The main idea of the show is there is three teams consisting of two players, they each have to get as many points as they can to have the longest possible time to run at the trolley dash at the end of the show. Here are a few examples of the games they play:

Word search
This is where a question is asked about a name hidden in a word search and whoever buzzes first answers. They then have to state the answer and state where it is in the word search.

Memory game
This is where certain items are seen going through the checkout, then after questions are asked about the items that went through which they have to remember. Again whoever buzzes first gets to answer.

There are more games but I'm sure you get the idea of it. The questions are about items, which can be bought in a supermarket, and if I am honest they are what I would call quite simple questions, you don't need to be super intelligent to answer them. This is why I quite like it as for once I can answer the questions and there really isn't lots of brain work involved, just great easy watching.


The contestants they have on the show are really quite embarrassing to watch sometimes. They always seem to be as tacky as the show and a little dim at times, but who am I to judge. It's the way they say the answer then add Dale's name on the end of it, it does make me chuckle!


Dale as a host I think is great he really is so camp, but so funny. Not to put Dale down as I do generally like him but I do think that having him as a host adds more to the tackiness of the show. At times he does use many sexual innuendos whilst presenting the show, which are very funny, he is almost funny without even trying. I don't think for his show that they could of chosen a better host he fits the bill very well.


There is of course only one winner in the end and this is decided by the cost of the trolley they have collected in the trolley dash. Each team as a certain time to run it depending on the points they have knocked up. On the trolley dash there are other things they can collect to boost up the amount in their trolley. This includes lots of inflatable bonuses, which often prove quite difficult for contestants to pick up. They can get pic n mix (of a certain weight) 3 items from Dales shopping list and some more. They can to get penalties, for example if they brake or drop an item. It really surprises me when they do the trolley dash as I always think they could get so much more than they do. I would be grabbing anything in reach; lots of them seem to waste time trying to weigh out the sweets or just don't go for the more expensive items. I keep thinking to myself come on its not rocket science, just chuck it in!


I do alsways laugh when the checkout assistants are adding the trolleys up through the checkouts as you see them all talking and laughing around it really is so staged. If you watch this programme I am sure you will know exactly which part I am talking about. if you haven't seen it then I suggest you catch up with an episode when it is on next just to see this part.


The winner is the pair with the highest amount in the trolley and they have to find certain items in the store given by clues. the prize is £5000, it was previously £2000 so its nice to see its gone up in line with everything else! This part really does annoy me about the show as they are often looking for something that is right in front of them. Myself and surely many others are at home shouting at the TV, telling them that its right in front of them, they never seem to find it though. I was watching re runs of this on challenge TV while back and I didn't see one couple that won. I thought this was a bit sad really as I always think it seems like the most simple game show around, but I suppose if you are just watching then it does seem easy, doesn't it?


All in all a great game show to watch, its easy watching and one you will be able to answer the questions, all I say is get it back on the TV
