Dawson’s Creek

I have been a Dawson’s Creek fan pretty much since it was first broadcast on UK TV. I was a little unsure about it at first, I mean the name of the main actor is James van der Beek, but after a few Sunday afternoon viewings on Channel 4, something strange occurred and I found myself checking to see when the show was on and making sure I caught it. Of course the fact that Sunday viewing is so bad may have had something to do with it. Alas, Dawson’s Creek (DC for short), while not earth-shattering is still a consistently entertaining piece of television that manages to kill one hour of my time every week. Now if the writers could just trying to convince us that ..... old James is 18.....

E4 is currently approaching the end of season 5, at least that’s my guess. The current season certainly does not have too long to go so tuning in at the moment would be quite moronic in all honesty. C4 should however be showing the season pretty soon so I would advise that you try and catch it then. I think overall this season is one of the most entertaining they have ever made and hopefully next season will treat us to more of the same.

Dawson Leery (James van der Beek)

Yep, the show is largely based around 18-year old (yeah right) Dawson and his friends and their experiences with growing up. I generally have mixed feelings about Dawson as a character, while he is nice, he is sometimes a little too nice and therefore uninteresting to watch. He has only really had 2 major relationships on the show - first with Jen and later with his good pal Joey (Joey is a female....just in case you were wondering). He also dated Pacey’s sister Gretchen (do they have horrible names on this some, or what?) but I never really cared about that. The problem with Dawson is that he can just be a little too intelligent and a little too much like an old woman for my liking. Plus, if I have to endure another season of Dawso
n over Joey I may just switch off completely.....again.

Josephine ‘Joey’ Potter (Katie Holmes)

She’s a sarcastic tomboy who gets straight A’s and is an all-round goody-two shoes. Perhaps that is why she is my least favourite character on the show. I have never taken to the Joey character and I doubt that I ever will. I think we are supposed to feel sorry for her (her mother is dead, her father in prison) and root for her, but unlike many I just cannot stand her, sorry. The only time I felt any sort of warmth towards her character was way back in season 2 when she binned off Dawson for Jack and later stood by Jack when the rumours of his gayness started. Of course those rumours were true, which signalled the end of the pair’s relationship which is a shame because I have never really liked Joey since that point.

Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson)

Cynical Pace, the other one with the stupid name, made headlines in early season 1 by taking some extra curricular biology lessons with his teacher. Yes, she was a chick, but he was also under-age, tut tut. Pacey is not my favourite person on the show, but I do not hate him, he’s an alright kind of guy. Besides doings some horizontal jogging with his teacher, in his time on the show, Pacey had dated mouthy Andie, Joey (grrrr) and slept with other, less noteworthy characters. The female viewers of DC have a kinship for ol’ Pace too which I kind of find a little difficult to understand. It’s not that he’s ugly, but when you’ve got Jack and Charlie to drool over who’s looking at Pacey?

Jennifer ‘Jen’ Lindley (Michelle Williams)

This ‘bad girl’ was raised in New York before her folks decided they’d had enough of her and she was sent to live with Grams (her grandmother) in Capeside just in time for episode 1. She quickly captured the heart of young Dawson, before he was brainwashed int
o thinking he had feelings for evil Joey. Well that’s my take on it anyway. Seriously Jen is my favourite character in the whole show and DC without her would not be DC if you ask me. Jen is lively, she’s funny, she speaks her mind and she is just a super cool chick. Also, in the current season the writers finally saw sense and matched Jen and Dawson up together. While I’m not too sure about Dawson as a character on his own, I think he and Jen go together like fish and chips, and it was nice to be able to see them as a couple....finally! Yes, that was another big spoiler but I don’t care!

Jack McPhee (Kerr Smith)

Jack was introduced into the show in it’s second season as the shy twin brother of loud-mouthed Andie (who has since departed). Since his arrival he has started a relationship with good girl Joey before discovering he felt strange sensations whilst in the company of hunky males. Yes, he is a self-confessed gay boy. Hopefully they’ll give him a proper boyfriend soooon.... I like Jack, he’s a decent all-round kind of guy and I think making him gay in his debut season in the show was actually a very brave thing to do. Jack is also a character that I like and have an interest in no matter who he is dating, what storyline he is in, or whether he’s in a storyline at all. With the exception of Jen, there is no other character in the show that I can really say that about.

Audrey.... (Busy Philipps)

New girl Audrey was only introduced into the show in it’s current season. She is a college student who rooms with and is best friends with Joey, which is never a good thing, but oh well. Apart from the friendship with the excruciatingly nice Ms. Potter Audrey is a rather likeable, fun character and in the great tradition of DC characters she is sarcastic, very sarcastic. Not to spoil things for you fans who haven’t got E4, but what the hell.... she has just hooked up with P
acey with should do her longevity as a character no harm. I can see Busy sticking around for a while. On a serious note though, I know American’s are prone to having out of the ordinary names, but who in their right mind would name their daughter Busy?! That poor girl...

Charlie.... (Chad Michael Murray)

He is not featured in the show nearly as often as he should be and sometimes goes weeks without appearing, but I just had to include him in here. Simply said, Charlie is GORGEOUS! I’m talking Brad Pitt in his prime type hunky here folks. On to the character info, oh well, Charlie is a newcomer too, he made his show debut as the love interest of Jen, but cheated on her and has pretty much been in character limbo ever since. Shame. Hopefully he’ll stick around for season 6 because I haven’t taken to a new character this much, this quickly since Jack in season 2. Watch out for the name because if there’s any justice Chad Michael Murray should be plastered all over your teenage daughter’s (or son’s, I’m open-minded) bedroom walls for years to come.

So there you go, that’s just about the gist of things. Of course there are other, less important character that I have left out such as, Joey’s sister Bessie, Jen’s grandmother ‘Grams’, Dawson’s mum Gayle and Joey’s new teacher who she just recently started to get, errr..... close to. What is it with this show and teacher-pupil relationships?

In all-seriousness, though it can be aimed at teenagers, DC is actually a rather mature, well written, if sometimes infuriating show. Just remember, if you ever do watch the show, that Joey Potter is an evil, evil girl, who should not be liked at any cost! Remember.....

Peace, Sas

I think it's possibly the most irritating thing on telly (with the possible exception of Ally McMuppet).

Still , a fantastic review there Sas!
