Advantages: addictive, family values, fun and funny storylines
Disadvantages: addictive, the occausional "now what were they thinking" storylines
Days of our Lives is set in Salem, Somewhere USA. The state is never mentioned. Days started in 1965 with the Bradys and Hortons. Alice Horton is one of the oldest characters, with the same actor since the show started. She's often the 'backbone' of the family, especially with her homemade donuts. Her beloved deceased Tom was also the 'backbone' of the family until the actors death. The actor's voice is still at the begining of the show with his "As with the sands of time (shown an hourglass), so goes the day of our lives". There are the usually soap opera stuff, such as one person cheating on another (either in relationship or in business), one backstabbing another, the question of who fathered a child, secrets and lies, and kidnapping, murders and mysteries. But there's also fun, laugher, funny scenes/comments, and family values. The family, for the most part, sticks together when in trouble (and for the Bradys and Hortons that's quite often). Just about every holiday possible, there is some kind of celebration where the families get together for potlucks and other things. Every Christmas, someone (it used to be Tom Horton), reads the Christmas story for the children in the hospital There's been fun times like when Jack dressed up as Santa and when to his girlfriend (Jennifer) house and proposed. Then later (after they divorced and then made up) on/near Valentine's day, Jennifer told Jack that she "needed to get something" then came down the stairs in the Santa suit. SHE tried to proposed to Jack, but he ended up doing it. Hope and Bo are couples that have been married for quite a few years (don't remember exactly how long). They've gone through enough to break any marriage, but stays together. They've gone through Hope being brainwashed to believe she's another woman, Gina (who died but just happened to look just like Hope, so Hope took her place).
During this time, Bo thought she had died and was about to marry Billy (who later miscarried their child, which she kept secret from Bo (in hopes to keep him). Hope came back and the trouble started, but Hope and Bo (as the fans knew would happen sooner or later) got back together. Then Hope had flashbacks of her time as Gina (thanks to the person that brainwashed her, Stephano (the "bad guy' of the show, who is always causing problems for the Bradys and Hortons)). The "transformation" took place and Hope/Gina left town. Bo found her and Hope finally "came out again" with Gina gone (hopefully permenantly). But Hope was pregnant! Then there was this entire issue of WHO the father was. They thought was Stephano and another person name John. But finally the truth came out and the father was BO (somehow while "Gina", there was this one moment where while with BO, they made love (writers put that 'window' into the story)). Then Hope was kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend (Bo rescued her from marrying the guy because she really didn't love him, but loved BO (her teenage love)). The boyfriend, Larry, ended up in prison. He wanted to "punish" Bo & Hope (because of their part in his being in prison) by kidnapping her and making her his slave. Bo, a cop, managed to rescue Hope from Larry once again (Larry tried to make it look a if Hope had 'died' (again!!) and so Bo and others played along with it to 'pull Larry out', which worked). Larry was shot and pressumed dead but he "got over it" and showed up later and tried to posion Hope and Belle (John's daughter by Marlena and Bo & Hope's son, Shawn's girlfriend). He was caught and is now in prison again. With all they have gone through, I just want Hope and Bo to be left alone for SOME time, but viewers know that won't happen. While there are the odd stories that you "just can't into" (like Marlena
9;s being processed), it's still fun to watch, and addictive! You just want to watch it more to find out what happens to these "people" who really don't exist.

- 10/04/03 Definitely falls into the category of being so bad that it's good... the plotlines make Brookside look realistic!! |

- 04/04/03 Never heard of this one - it sounds like it's well worth checking out though, it's got all the ingredients of a great soap opera.
Loved your review, gave it a VU rating. Well done. Ziggy. |
