Advantages: Some good viewing
Disadvantages: None
Deal or No Deal was introduced to our screens last October and is introduced by Noel Edmonds who shot to fame in the 70s as a radio DJ and host of the Saturday morning children’s show Swap Shop. He then went on to do shows such Telly Addicts and House Party.
You can find Deal or No Deal on Channel 4 Monday to Friday at 4.15pm which is inbetween Countdown and Richard and Judy. You can also see it on Saturday at around 5.15 but I have known times to vary on Saturdays.
The show has 22 contestants on it but only 1 of these can go on to play the game. Each contestant has a red box with a number on it from 1-22 and inside these boxes there are money values starting at 1p and going up to £250,000. None of the contestants know what is in their box as they pick them at random. There is only one person who knows what is in each box and that is the independent ajudicator who puts the amount in the boxes and then seals them.
Now as I said earlier there are always 22 contestants on the show and at the beginning one is chosen at random to come and join Noel at the table and play the game.
The object of the game is to walk away with the most amount of money as you can and to try to defeat the banker.
In the first round the contestant has to pick 5 boxes and hopefully stay away from the bit amounts of money, after the first 5 boxes are opened the Banker will now call to offer a cash alternative to the contestant and this can vary to what amounts of cash are left on the board. The contestant is then asked “Deal or No Deal” if they say No Deal then the show goes on and then each round from then in they have to open three boxes before the Banker’s phone call.
Now I have watched many of these shows and the amount of contestants who come on and say they have a system really amuses me, if it was me who was playing I would just shout out numbers at random after all there is only one person who knows what is them and ok you could say that someone always has high numbers so stay away from them etc but how do you know. So as I say just shout a number and hope for the best.
As the game goes on the tension builds and Noel being the great presenter really adds to this for instance at crucial moments he will go to a commercial break, a bit like Millionaire I suppose.
One thing I like about Noel he does try to make sure the contestants do well he will give them plenty of time to think and let them ask advice from other contestants and members of the audience. I often find myself shouting at the TV like many other people around the country but there are times that I do feel it for them as it can be a huge life changing decision to make.
Many of the contestants go on with an idea of how much they would want to walk away with but I suppose when you get to that target there is always something lurking at the back of your mind “can I go on and take more” etc.
If and when the contestant finally Deals its not the end as Noel continues with the show but this time they are trying to prove that they done the right thing and this time they are looking for the high numbers.
There have been contestants who have dealt too soon and could have walked away with more money but I suppose that is the gamble that you have to take and that is why I like this show so much.
Another thing I really like is that the other contestants are all willing each other to do well. Once you get chosen for the show you stay there until you get chosen, not like Millionaire where you only get one chance basically. They look like they all get on really well which is what I like to see.
Summary: A good teatime television show
