Advantages: Exciting, chance of lots of money
Disadvantages: Quite repetative, shown when I'm at work
'Deal or no Deal' has been around a few years, and I first encountered it at university. It is shown in the late afternoon, so now I'm working I rarely get the chance to see it.
'Deal or no Deal' screens on channel 4, and is hosted by Noel Edmends. It was a great comeback show for him, and resurected his career. He is the perfect host for the show, warm, personable, funny, and seems genuinely involved in the game.
The idea of 'Deal or no Deal' is 24 people stand in a line with numbered boxes, every day one is randomly selected to come forward and play for money. Every box contains a figure. This can be as little as 1p, or as much as £250,000. Contestants pick 3 boxes, revealing those numbers and thereby reducing the possibilities of what is in their box. After they pick 3 boxes, they will be offered a settlement from the faceless 'banker' on the end of the telephone. If they take it, they leave with that much money, regardless of what is in the box. The offer varies depending on how many high or low numbers are left in play. They keep picking boxes until they take the settlement, or are only left with their box and take home whatever is contained within it.
'Deal or no deal' is not a complicated programme, nor is it intellectual, but the contestants picked usually have a lovely story to tell, and you end up really rooting for them and excited with each blue number (the smallest ones) which are revealled.
I think this show is great family entertainment, and while the format quickly becomes repetative, its still uplifting background noise.
Summary: Would you beat the banker?

- 09/11/09 People get so greedy! I think if I was offered anything over about £10k I'd take it - a bird in the hand... |
