Delias How to CookNewest Review: ... Maybe she does come across to some as slightly above everyone else, I can see that, but her way of showing how to make both simple and difficult dishes makes for compulsive viewing for some, like me. In her 'How to Cook' series, she showed how to make simple things (OK, I agree, how to make toast was a bit condescending) and the general day to day meals like Shepherd's Pie, but with a twist to it, a la Delia. I am always fascinated by good cookery programmes, but prefer the ones that cover recipes you can make for your family, like Delia does. Apparently hers wasn't suitable, not enough space or light to accommadate the cameras and lighting. I am sure there are many women out there that can remember their cookery lessons at school and how the teacher was so boring, we were falling alseep in our pastry. She must have been one of them! Delia has the same techniques, going through every ingredient, and endless details about the method involved in that monotone voice and expressionless face. Please remove her from ... She stands there, her face a porcelain mask of inexpression, her every move stilted and robotic. And that voice, that slow, uninflected, soulless voice. But, ah, you may say, what about the food? Well, if you like the food, buy the book. I would personally say that a lot of Delia's recipes are thoroughly uninspiring, and that much-vaunted advantage of her stuff, that it always works, is a thorough disadvantage. I mean, try a recipe from Nigel Slater, Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson, and the chances are, they work. But they encourage ... Read the complete review
