Advantages: Great acting - some good guest appearances

Disadvantages: Stories not strong enough - rushed endings

The trailers for this programme which was shown on ITV1 looked amazing - a British version of Supernatural we thought. However it didn't really live up to our expectations.

The programme starts with Luke finding out that he is part of the Van Helsing Dynasty. He is visited by one of his late fathers best friends, and his godfather - an American called Rupert Galvin. This part is played by Phillip Glenister of Life on Mars fame, unfortunately he plays it as an American and it just didn't work for me. There is something about English people playing Americans and vice versa that just never seems to work. It really didn't add anything to the storyline that he was American so I think it would have been more credible to have left him being English.

Anyway Luke does not believe anything he is told about half-lifes (the supernatural baddies) and other spooky creatures and doesn't want anything to do with fighting them.

However when his best friend is kidnapped by a powerful Half life, who is played by Mackenzie Crook he is forced to face the fact that he is needed.

There are some powerful performances from the guest appearances such as Mackenzie Crook and Richard Wilson as a very spooky priest character, but the stories really aren't strong enough and seem to be very rushed in their endings, this was certainly the case in the sceond episode when one minutre they were fighting with the demon and the next the fire was put out and they were rescuing the children.

This programme is only shown at 7pm on a saturday so the level of violence and spooky characters it can show is limited. It isn't going to challenge Doctor Who and will in no way replace Supernatural.

I have heard that they were hoping to make a second series but that Phillip glenister has pulled out so not sure if we will see this on our screens again

Summary: An Ok series but not soemthing to set saturdays nights alight
