Advantages: Hilarious, Family sitcom

Disadvantages: Not on anymore

Desmonds is one of my all time favourite TV programmes. It's the kind of programme where you never tire of seeing the same episodes because they are just so funny.

It is set in a Barber's shop in Peckham called 'Desmond's'. The stories revolve around Desmond, his wife Shirley and their family and friends. A lot of the humour is based on the Afro-Caribbean culture: playing dominos, drinking rum and having a good natter.

Desmond and Shirley are of Guyanese background and they moved over to England many years ago. Although they have made their new life in Peckham, they always yearn for 'the good old days back in Guyana'. Their children, Michael, Gloria and Sean (in their late teens and 20's) having been born and brought up in South London have different ideas about their lives and again this creates many funny confrontations with their parents.

Here is a short guide to the other characters who make this a unique comedy:

Pork Pie: also from Guyana who loves to play his guitar. He is the local lollipop man who is always the butt of Matthew's jokes.

Matthew: an academic from Nigeria who at the age of 40 still hasn't had his first job. (since he is always studying). He always comes up with obscure 'old African sayings..' which no one else has heard of.

Lee: a young twenty something who is always wheeling and dealing. He is a bit of a ladies man.

Beverley: an eccentric old lady who lives for her husband. (i.e. she must be home by 6.30 to cook her husband's dinner). She always wears a woolly hat whether its winter or summer.

Overall: a good alternative comedy. Everyone in my house used to love watching Desmonds, whatever their age. Characters are imaginative and true to life. I'm sure I've seen a 'Beverley' on the 109 bus in Streatham... Unfortunately, its not on Channel 4 anymore but I have seen it being repeated on Sky a while
back. You can also get it on video.

I used to love this. It was a real shame when Desmond died (not him obviously, but the actor).
