Advantages: Like nothing else on TV
Disadvantages: You have a lot to catch up with if you haven't seen the show already
An amazing TV series. I was slow to catch on to this until a few friends started talking about it at work. I watched an episode mid-season on FX and was so impressed with the characters and the dark, dark humour that I downloaded the episodes that I had missed and spent a happy weekend catching up.
Dexter, the eponymous 'hero' of the show works in forensics as a blood-spatter expert. On the face of it he's a charming, witty and popular member of his police department. He also happens to be a psychopath and emotionless serial killer! However, Dexter chooses his victims very carefully. He targets those individuals that have committed gross crimes themselves and, for whatever reason, have evaded justice. He uses a code of conduct carefully and deliberately ingrained in him by his now departed father to select kills. If you don't fit the code you're quite safe.
Although Dexter doesn't feel emotion like the rest of us "more-balanced" individuals, he observes human beviour keenly and acts as he believes one should. Much of the humour of the show stems from Dexter's inner dialogue with himself and his wry observations concerning 'normal people'.
Dexter is unlike anything you will have seen before. The idea od a loveable serial killer seems unlikely but you can't fail to be taken in by his charms. On so many levels this is excellent television.
Summary: Compulsive viewing
