This is my first review of a tv/film/music so don't judge me too harshly but construstive cristism would be much appreciated! :)
Dexter is my all time favourite series and I can't wait to see series 7 but unfortunately being in the UK I will have to keep up to date online! I really love this show because it's so different to all other crime shows, it's about serial killer who kills killers. (Oh, the irony!) I was quite late getting into Dexter and started watched the repeats on FX in the lead up to the Series 4 premiere. Each series focuses on a different theme or emotion and gives Dexter something new to deal with such as love, family, revenge, friendship and religion.
Dexter has to juggle his job, a blood spatter analyst as part of the Miami Homicide Police team and his killing needs. To make himself more normal he go on search for a woman as a partner as a sort of 'cover.' This relationship develops over series and always adds tension and often humor to the series as Dexter describes himself as being incapable of having real human emotions. The show explores all sorts of usual emotional aspects of life and this often ends up with Dexter questioning whether he is capable of being human and struggling with having to hide his 'dark passenger' as he calls it. This makes for an interesting, gripping watch that often causes you to question things about yourself and what you think of his actions. Dexter has conversations with his dead adoptive father, Harry, who has a 'code' for Dexter to follow so he does not get caught killing as Harry realised he carried this dark passenger from a young age. It's hard to describe these conversations as they are not really hallucinations or dreams but shows us what Dexter is thinking.
It is also one of the few TV series that has a consistent voice over from the main character which is usually only done in films or series that are aimed at teenagers. However it works really well with Dexters emotionless voice adding his thoughts which are often humorous to the viewer making him really likeable (even though he kills people!). Michael C Hall does an excellent job of playing Dexters character, I watched a few videos of him youtube performing on Broadway shows and it really shows what a great actor he is as it's so different to the Dexter character he is so well known for.
I think the writers of the show are incredible too as the tension build across each series is great and there are many twists that make you wonder how Dexter is going to get out of the many predicaments he gets into and add to his life to make his killing needs more difficult to do. The actors most of the time are very believable and I feel this really draws the audience in even further and you can really empathise with each characters, especially Dexter (even though he's a serial killer...). There is one particular actor in series four, who does such a good job that whenever I see him in another programme of film I literally shudder, god knows what I would do if I saw him in person!
The opening sequence is one of the best I've seen, it is Dexters morning routine of getting dressed, shaving and preparing his breakfast. Each shot has connotations of killing or death such as blood running down Dexter throat as he shaves, suffocating when Dexter pulls his t shirt over his head, lacing up his shoes tightly like strangling or cutting up his meat when eating. The sequence is accompanied by a quirky instrumental theme song that sounds cheery with menacing undertones, many of the instruments used are actually from antique instruments made from human or animal bones (ew!). The entire soundtrack has this feeling as it a mix of spanish sounding music that is quite humorous when played at many points with a mix of ominous, tension building instrumentals that both set the moods perfecting.
I'd recommend Dexter to everyone! Mainly to those interested in crime shows as it offers such a different perspective or people interested in phsycogical/emotional behaviour as I'm sure Dexter and many of the other characters must be extremely interesting to study. The show is often quite gruesome (it's a 9oclock type show!) with lots of blood, as to be expected, and a lot of dead bodies or parts of bodies. There is also fairly graphic sex sometimes, not quite a bad as True Blood but sometimes close to it! Plus a heavy amount of swearing, especially from Dexters sister who can barely say one sentence without the word f*** but most of her dialogue is quite hilarious. The quality of set design and the fake body parts and blood are extremely good (not that I've seen any in person) but they look very realistic and gross.
I've recently found out that Dexter is going to finish on it's 8th series and I don't know how I'm going to cope when it's over! :(
Summary: Amazing tv show! Should have 10 stars!
