Since I've been at home for the last couple of weeks I have been catching a bit of day time tele and it reminded me how much I liked Diagnosis Murder.
Diagnosis Murder is a mystery crime drama series staring Dick Van Dyke as a medical doctor who solves crimes with the help of his son who is a homicide detective. I think one of the main reasons why I like this show is because of Dick Van Dyke. He has been one of my favourite actors since Mary Poppins and this was something of his comeback show. He just seems such a nice person, a really friendly Grandpa type and this comes off in the show as well. The name Diagnosis Murder uses the DM initials and if you turn them round it spells out MD.
Each episode there is a different crime that Dick Van Dyke (Dr. Mark Sloan) solves. Most of the episodes revolve around the hospital where he works and often involve either patients or some of the nursing/doctor staff. Generally you see the murder take place first and then it's a case of watching Dr Sloan figure it out and how he goes about it. I would say that this show is not particularly sophisticated like the CSI dramas are. It really isn't on the same league but it's a fun entertaining show to watch.
His son on the show, Detective Steve Sloan is played by his real life son, Barry Van Dyke. They have a really nice relationship and apparently do so in real life too. In the show they work off each other, bouncing ideas off each other to eventually work out the crime. They live together at a beach house and a lot of the storylines involve Barry and his search for a girlfriend. The girlfriends come and go quite frequently but never really turn into anything and are sometimes involved in the cases that he is investigating. I definitely think Barry provides a bit of eye candy so that is part of the reason why I enjoy watching this show.
There are a couple of other characters on the show that are regulars. They work in the hospital too. There is Dr Amanda Bentley who is a pathologist and Dr Jesse Travis.
The show ran from 1993 to 2001 and is show on BBC1 at 2:15pm every weekday
