Advantages: Dicko!
Disadvantages: Greedy Dealers
Dickinsons Real Deal, in another antiques and collectables exploitation show. Bargain hunt was the catalyst for this explosion of banal daytime TV, and despite the auction / information format, there is not really a lot to learn from this program.
Unlike the antiques roadshow, people bring their precious family heir looms to be valued, but then they barter with an "expert" for the best price they can get. Some of the experts appear to be serious dealers with wads of cash, who are clearly out to make a buck (as with most dealers).
This leads up to many awkward moments, where Old Mrs Jones is trying to eak out an extra fiver for her dads war medals. When the dealers will not stump up the cash, the items are put into auction where sometimes they make a nice sum, but more than usually they are a disapointment.
It seems that we are living in a time when people would rather have a flat screen TV or a day at a spa, then keep hold of an item that has been in the family for hundreds of years.
Dealer -"So, where did you get this lovely watch?"
Mrs Miggins - "It was my great great grandfathers, he survived the Russian revolution, escaped the gulags, then took a perilous journey across war torn europe, never once parting with the watch, despite losing everything else. He then gave the watch to my grandfather, who wore it all through world war two, surviving a prisoner of war camp. My father then gave the watch to me on his deathbed, asking me to pass it to my son."
Dealer -"So what would you do with the money if you sold it today?"
Mrs Miggins "I'd have a day out at Cadbury World"
Dealer -"I'll give you a tenner"
Mrs Miggins - "Done!"
There are too many of these shows. They teach people nothing but greed.
Summary: Too many "antiques" shows
