~What is it~
Doctor Who is British science fiction series about a time travelling 'man' who also happens to come from the planet Gallifrey, and is a 'Time Lord' - in fact the last of the Time Lords. He is known only as The Doctor, and he travels through space and time in his blue police box which he calls The TARDIS. TARDIS stands for Time and Relative Dimension(s) in Space, and is bigger on the inside.
Doctor Who originally aired for 1963 - 1989 and then was reborn in 2005 by the BBC, and is now incredibly popular.
Everytime the Doctor dies he regenerates into a new body, to date there have been 10 doctors.
William Hartnell 1963-1966
Patrick Troughton 1966-1969
Jon Pertwee 1970-1974
Tom Baker 1974-1981
Peter Davison 1981-1984
Colin Baker 1984-1986
Sylvester McCoy 1987 - 1989
Paul McGann 1996 (briefly in a film)
Christopher Eccleston 2005
David Tennant 2005-2010
The Doctor is always accompanied by a companion (usually female), with whom he shares his adventurous life.
~Is it good?~
I have been watching Doctor Who for as long as I can remember; we used to watch it ever Sunday before Church, although I never got the chance to watch the endings, as we had to leave.
The current doctor David Tennant is truly brilliant, he play the part perfectly, (plus he is sexy), he is very entertaining to watch, sadly though he is leaving after this series. I don't generally like sci-fi, but Doctor Who is different, it doesn't seem as ridiculous as say Star Trek, its mellow and with excellent unpredictable story lines.
The series has changed a lot since the time it began, its more free, more risqué and I personally prefer it.
If you want a good series, give this a try. There has been a few spin - offs, the Sarah Jane Mysteries and Torchwood. I don't like Torchwood as much as Doctor Who, it's watchable, but it lacks the essence of The Doctor and his mysterious life.
So watch Doctor Who, and marvel at the wonder that is The Tardis (and David Tennant).
Summary: A brilliant TV series
