Advantages: Time travel, the Tardis!

Disadvantages: Cheap special effects in the older shows.

I've watched Doctor Who ever since I was a child, starting with Peter Davison. I've always liked the premise, but felt that with the crappy special effects of the later years, it was difficult to stomach, especially when you had American importants on offer such as Star Trek.

But then came the restart with Chris Eccelston. DW has from that point onwards truly been a great show. It has reached its peak with David Tennant and I only hope Matt Smith can continue to carry the torch.

The First Doctor

Some people find it hard to go back to the old shows, but William Hartnell's performance was wondeful. It set the premise for the mysterious and wise traveller and it was absolutely right that the character start in this fashion.

The Second Doctor

The show began to go from strength to strength and Patrick Troughton would go from the wise old man of Hartnell to a clownish, energetic doctor and really added youth and vitality to the show (by 60s standards).

The Third Doctor

Jon Pertwee, a comedy actor? Well it turned out pretty well. He ended up being one of the most serious doctor, albiet one with silly vehicles. He is one of my favourites and his stories are great....and the first in colour!

The Fourth Doctor

Well what can be said about Tom Baker? For many years everyone's favourite doctor he was, quite frankly, a bizarre man, but thet of course was perfect for the role. He was well spoken and articulate, but mysterious and engaging. A perfect choice for the role.

The Fifth Doctor

Youth comes to the Tardis! This was, like David Tennant, my doctor. He was a great addition to mythos and it is a shame he only stayed in the role a couple years.

The Sixth Doctor

Ok, the costume was awful, but the Sixth Doctor, for me, was very well played by Colin Baker. He was the complete opposite from his costume. Dark, guarded and insular. You never quite knew what was going on with him and I think that was serious underrated.

The Seventh Doctor

Although Sylvester McCoy tried to maintain some of the darkness of his predecessor, he very much ended up a clown. This isn't all his fault as the writers were letting him down, but I found his Doctor the weakest.

The Eighth Doctor

Oh what a good Doctor Paul McGann would have made had he been given a series. Its a shame that the TV movie suffered from a bad script and bad support cast acting as I think he could have been one of the best Doctors had been given the chance.

The Ninth Doctor

Leather jacket and northern accent. Not very Doctor like perhaps, but Eccelston was otherwise engaging and brought a new energy to the role.

The Tenth Doctor

David Tennent has really made the role his own. I feel his Doctor has more depth than any of those who came before and he has been a pleasure to watch.

The Eleventh Doctor

Will Matt Smith, the youngster actor ever to play the Doctor, be able to fill the other's shoes? Only time will tell!

This show is wonderful. It takes you all over the universe and then back home again. Miss it and you are missing a British institution.

Summary: A classic British institution.
