***Doctor Who 2005 : the plots so far***

We're already most of the way through the series, so here's a quick rundown of the plots of the episodes which have aired so far, along with the cast and crew listings and a few of my personal remarks..

Episode 1:

ROSE
We're introduced to the new Doctor and he meets his latest sidekick, Rose Tyler. The focus of her world starts to shift from her mum and boyfriend Mickey to a whole new kind of existence saving the world!

The best bits?
A good introduction with some tongue in cheek references to the old series, such as a question as to why a police box would make a good disguise in the 21st century! The best line has to be when she asks him why he has a Northern accent and he replies that "every planet has a North!"

Episode 2:

THE END OF THE WORLD

Rose's first journey in time is to the year Five Billion to watch the end of the world with a load of aliens (and no, there's no restaurant...). But there's a bit of bother with some dodgy mechanical spiders...

The best bits?
Has to be the aliens, especially Zoe Wannamaker as the last ever human - a very scary bit of skin stretched onto a frame that has to be constantly sprayed with water!

CAST

Doctor Who - CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON
Rose Tyler - BILLIE PIPER

episode 3:

THE UNQUIET DEAD
Back in time this time to 1869, where the Doctor and Rose team up with Charles Dickens (yes, the Charles Dickens) to fight some creatures made of gas which are taking over dead bodies.

The best bits?
Neat special effects in this one, but the most memorable bit is when Dickens exclaims " What the Shakespeare is that? ". Very neat.

Gabriel Sneed - ALAN DAVID
Redpath - HUW RHYS
Mrs Peace - JENNIFER HILL

episode 4:

ALIENS OF LONDON

Back in London again (with a whole universe to explore they seem to like England...) and a spaceship crash-lands in the Thames. Time to save the world!

The best bits?
The aliens (Slitheen) that dress up as humans. Not only do they have to unzip their foreheads but they break wind repeatedly. Quality Saturday night entertainment!

episode 5:

WORLD WAR THREE

The conclusion of last week's story as Downing Street announces mankind's first Interplanetary War. The Doctor, Rose, Harriet Jones, Mickey and Rose's mum save the day between them.

The best bits?
When Mickey hacks into some of the most sensitive compuetrs in the world because the Doctor is able to guess the password!

DALEK

Yes, the one you've been waiting for since you were 7 yrs old...Henry Van Statten is a collector of all things alien and has the last Dalek who's about to break free....I won't spoil it if you don't know what happens.

The best bits?
The answer to the age old riddle about Daleks and stairs --- "Levitate, Levitate!"

THE LONG GAME

Adam ( a guy from the last episode ) travels with them to the future to Satellite 5 a media space station that broadcasts to the whole Earth Empire. But why is anyone who is promoted to Floor 500 is never seen again?

The best bits?
Has to be Adam, the poor unfortunate - just wait and see what happens when anyone clicks their fingers....now that was a shock for his mum!

Adam - BRUNO LANGLEY
Grimy Man - COLIN PROCKTER

episode 8:

FATHER'S DAY

By Paul Cornell
Rose travels back to 1987, to witness the day her Father died. But when she interferes "Reapers" are unleashed upon the world. Even the Doctor can't save the day this time..

The best bits?
Neat special effects with the 'Walking with Dinosaurs' Reapers and a cleverly thought out, twisting and turning human-interest plot this one.

Rose Tyler - BILLIE PIPER
Jackie Tyler - CAMILLE CODURI
Pete Tyler - SHAUN DINGWALL

Stuart - CHRISTOPHER LLEWELLYN
Sonny - FRANK ROZELAAR-GREEN

Suzie - RHIAN JAMES
Young Mickey - CASEY DYER

episode 9:

The scariest one by far...At the height of the Blitz homeless children are being pursued by an unearthly child.

The best bits?
Richard Wilson is always a winner and he's suitably convincing as the Doctor. The child nearly had me, a grown woman, behind the sofa it was so eery!!! And if you've ever wanted to see a gas mask grow out of someone's face...

**And still to come...**

Details of what's left are a bit sketchy, but..

episode 10:

THE DOCTOR DANCES

The second part of episode 9. We're promised a zombie army...

Plus..
11: Boom Town
12: Bad Wolf
13: The Parting of the Ways

**Some final thoughts**

I think this has been better than I would have ever thought so far and I see no reason why the final episodes should disappoint. It had a lot to live up to, and it's managed it and more. The series combines great special effects with a tongue in cheek look at the whole Doctor Who legend. You won't find me anywhere else on a Saturday night. It's a shame that Christopher is not doing another series as I'd like to see him develop it more, and now it looks like Billie might be off too. Who know what next?

Oh, and the title? My toddler's favourite joke:

Knock knock
Who's there?
Doctor
Doctor Who?

Sorry, really sorry....

I've only seen on episode (Father's Day, whislt visiting a friend who watches it avaidly) and I really enjoyed it - I thought Christopher Ecclestone made a good doctor so it is a shame he is leaving after only one series

Great review. Will be a shame if it loses another of the main characters - Rose. It has only just reinvented itself. And it will have to do it all over again in the next series.
