I always thought Drop The Dead Donkey was a very funny sitcom. It was set in the offices of Globelink News and this setting gave the opportunity for some good topical news related jokes about people or items in the news. The programme was first shown in 1990 and was the creation of Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin. At this time the Thatcher era in politics was just ending and the Major years as PM followed. This gave a rich vein of comic possibilities as of course did the Clinton presidency in the US. Set in the newsroom at Globelink, a fictional company that of course bore no relation to a certain network owned by Rupert Murdoch. The comedy follows a cast of archetype characters who work there; Henry the bon viveur anchorman Sally the brainless newsreader bimbo (who has a pechant for sleeping with long-distance lorry drivers) Dave, the womanising, gambling, loveable rogue, George, the hypochodriac editor who is barely in control of his own life, let alone the newsroom Gus, the business-speaking puppet of the owner, the often alluded to (but never seen until the final episode) Sir Royston Merchant Damien, the psychotic lead ...  Read the complete review

Drop The Dead Donkey was a satirical newsroom comedy that aired in the 1990s. It featured the characters working in the newsroom and touched on topical issues. The newsroom features Globelink news, a company taken over by a new owner. Gus Hedges is employed to run it, and he provides the 'posh' manager nature to the room. George is the office pushover, doing whatever anyone asks of him. The two news anchors are Henry Davenport and Sally Smedley, both completely unlike each other and unafraid of back stabbing each other, too. The office sleaze is Dave Charnley, and the roving reporter who fakes his documentaryh reports is Damien Day. The cast work ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Why did they drop this? (289 words)

Drop the Dead Donkey is an excellent satire of a TV newsroom which first aired in the 90's, these days it can be seen on Paramount Comedy as re-runs, it is still very funny but part of the attarction of this show was the fact that it dealt with topical news and some of the scenes were shot very close to the actual date of broadcast so it was really cutting edge and very topical. The hypothetical news eam was called Globelink News and after a new owner takes over he instals his toady yes man in control in the form of Gus Hedges, the foil for the corporate yes man is the spinelessGeorge Dent and man who is on the edge after his wife left him, he is totally out ...  Read the complete review

Comedies come in all shapes and gags. Drop the dead donkey served well for eight years (1990-1998 shown on Channel 4). Globelink News is owned by a tyrant business man. He is never shown in the show until the last episode he has a yes man managing chief executive. There is constant battle between the staff and the chief executive who wants to sensationalise the news to get more viewers. There are around nine main characters. The filming was done near the time of broadcast to bring in real life stories. . As far as satirical comedy goes this show was up there with the best. Every show had quality script although ...  Read the complete review
