** The Programme **
Due South is a Canadian television programme that mixes both comedy and drama. The programme first aired in 1994 and ran until 1999. It follows Royal Canadian Mounted Police Officer Constable Benton Fraser and his half wolf half dog companion Diefenbaker. The pair find themselves living in Chicago, where Fraser's policing methods aren't taken too seriously.
** The Story **
The basic storyline centers around a Constable from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police by the name of Benton Fraser (Paul Gross). Constable Fraser travels to Chicago to try and solve the murder of his father. He meets his new partner Detective Ray Vecchio (David Marciano) who is a streetwise tough cop. Constable Fraser is accompanied by his half wolf half dog Diefenbaker.
** The Characters **
* Constable Benton Fraser *
Constable Benton Fraser is the "typical" Mountie, polite and compulsively truthful; which often lead to brilliantly hilarious and slightly uncomfortable moments where he has his moral code tested.
He seems to have an unusual knowledge about practically everything, more often than not obscure things, which is often attributed to his grandparents being librarians. He has a range of "abilties" including emerging from any explosion or fall with her uniform unwrinkled and spotless. He also uses his "sniff and lick" technique to determine all sorts of things, which Ray always finds disgusting. Constable Frasier (or Benny to Ray!) is also haunted by the ghost of his father, who tries to help Benton with various matters, usually with some absurdley useless advice.
* The Rays *
The original Detective Ray Vecchio was played by David Marciano who was an intalian street tough cop. He is Benton's best friend in Chicago. Marciano was replaced by Callum Keith Rennie as Stanley Raymond Kowalski who impersonates Vecchio as he is undercover (confused? Lol). One of the best scenes is when Kowalski is admanent he is "Ray" and Benton is completely confused and lost.
Vecchio did return in the series finale when he ran off with Kowalski's ex wife, Stella.
* Diefenbaker *
Diefenbaker is Benton's half dog half wolf companion. Benton save Dief from a mine and they became good pals, then Dief saved Benton's life, in which he lost his hearing and has learnt to lip read. Sometimes it does appear that Dief suffers from selective hearing rather than actually being deaf.
* Guest Appearances *
The show featured one major guest star in the form of Leslie Nielson. He appeared as Benton's father's partner in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He was brilliant and really funny, and added a touch of Hollywood!
** My Summary **
I loved watching this programme when I was younger. It was and still is very entertaining with some great plots, some which are slightly far fetched, and some fantastic humour, mainly centred around Benton and Dief.
Having not seen this programme for a good few years, I may actually attempt to find it on DVD as writing about it ahs bought back so many good memories for me.
Summary: 5 Super Stunning Stars!
