Advantages: Used to have great storylines

Disadvantages: A bit boring

There was a time when I used to be addicted to Eastenders, I would never miss an episode and the days when it wasnt on there used to feel like there was something missing. However that was around five years ago and now I just watch it every now and then and I can safely say that the show has changed a lot and really not to any great effect.

Now the show is based a lot more on families and a little more like Coronation Street but I will be looking more at the Eastnders of old. There has been a very high turnover in the cast and with the exception of Ian and Dot there is barely anyone I recognize, so is this really a soap. More like just random people told to use their sub standard acting and then get fired after a few years in turn for some more random actors.

The main reason I got addicted in the first place was due to the great gangster storyline. Of course it is nothing like godfather, but there was some great character. Especially the three way rivalry between Phil, Steve and Dan(not to be confused with Dennis or his dad Den). They all hated eachother and had some great tension. Of course in typical Eastenders fashion Steve has been killed, although with being one of the stars of the show, I am sure it must have been him who decided to leave the show.

Ok now let me just say this first. How in the hell does Phil seem to have so many girls, with a lot of them being pretty decent looking. Maybe with myself being straight, it is not plausible for me to judge men, but I can just not see what women see in Phil. Is is that rugged power, god doesnt even know. I just see a fat middle aged bald man, who has more fat than muscle and thinks hes a macho machine, but probabaly couldnt last more than 30 seconds in a proper fight.

Eastenders is still one of the most popular soaps in this country and has been running for well over twenty years now. This is an immense achievement, however it doesnt really represent real life. Well I guess it didnt when I was watching it with the gangster storylines, so they made it a bit more mellow and realistic.

I don't think I will ever become addicted to this show again, and having discovered a lot more amazing American shows like 24, prison Break, Lost etc I really don't need Eastenders in my life anymore.

Summary: Needs an overhaul
