Advantages: Still winning award and getting the viewers 25 years on

Disadvantages: Unbelievable and unrealistic soap

I have always been a fan of soap operas and at one point I watched them all; Corrie, Eastenders, Emmerdale, Brookside, Hollyoaks, Neighbours and Home and Away. Nowadays I don't get as much time to watch all the soaps with three young boys to run around after and I just watch Coranation Street, Hollyoaks and on occassions Emmerdale. However the reason I don't watch Eastenders anymore is not due to lack of time but the fact I just don't like it.

Eastenders first started in February 1985, so almost 25 years ago and it can be found on BBC1. At the moment it is on:
Monday- 8pm
Tuesday- 7.30pm
Thursaday- 7.30pm
Friday- 8pm.

The soap is based around Albert Square which is in the East End of London. On Albert Square are all the houses and flats where the characters live and all the action we see is in the square, houses or the other various buildings. They have:

The Queen Vic- This is probably the most famous of TV soap pubs and lots of the action happens in the pub. It is currently owned by the Mitchells but has had many landlords and landladys over the years.

The Cafe- This is where all the characters seem to go to eat their breakfast and is owned and run by Ian Beale, he also has a fish and chip shop on the square.

The Market- This is also a famous part of Eastenders has been a major feature of the soap since the beginning, the Fowler's fruit and veg stall is the one that I remember the most.

The Garage- Phil Mitchell owns the garage and Minty and up until a few weeks ago Gary works in the garage.

Newsagents, Laundrette and Beauticians are also shops on Albert Square where the characters work and visit.

When it comes tothe families on the soap there have been a few families that have been on there for many years. The Mitchells have been a very dominant force in the soap with Peggy Mitchell being the matriarch of the family. The Fowlers were on the soap since the beginning but I think they have all now died or left the soap. Ian Beale is the only remaining Beale in the soap and probably he is the longest serving cast member. The are always bringing new characters and families into the soap.

When it comes to watching Eastenders I am not really a big fan, the storylines are very extreme and unbelievable. It is a very depressing and miserable soap, nothing good happens to any of the characters. What annoys me the most is the number of gangsters and murderers there are, it is just so far fetched and I realise it is only a television program but the gangsters, violence and murders are just too unrealistic.

Eastenders is still a very popular soap and always wins at award ceremonies which really bugs me as I am so in the Coronation Street camp, it isn't a patch on Corrie!

I did used to watch Eastenders for many years but there is enough misery in the world without tuning in four times a week to watch even more. I'll be sticking with Corrie and Hollyoaks from now on.

Summary: Could be so much better
