Advantages: raises social awareness, shown daily

Disadvantages: gets a bit tedious

Eastenders was first broadcast on February 19th 1985, it is set in the fictional place of walford in East London but it's main focus is on the residents of fictional Albert Square.
EastEnders is filmed at the BBC Television Studios at Elstree in Hertfordshire.
Filming can be watched on www.bbc.co.uk/eastender and click on webcam. It's there you will see Albert square, George Street and Turpin Road, even though I watch it on the telly it still seems a bit surreal to see it all via webcam!!

All the characters are part of their own families for example; The Mitchells, The Slaters, The Beales, and so on. Everyone in Eastenders either uses The Queen Vic (short for Victoria) a pub owned by the Mitchells, The Argy Bahji which is an Indian restuarant or they will occasionly head to the nightclub which is now known as R&R's (formally E20).

I do like eastenders but it can get a bit tedious at times, and sometimes you can go a few weeks without watching it and pick up on what has happened and the story line pretty quickly! It does however have quite gripping storylines which include the following; violence, rape, murder, HIV, child abuse, domestic violence, affairs and mental health to name a few. It's quite good at raising the awareness of those things. At the moment (09/2009) the character Stacey Slater is learning to cope with her diagnosis of Bipolar, the same condition her mother Jean suffer's with. I suppose any other young girls watching who can relate to Stacey are then more likely to seek medical help, the same thing can be said about Staceys pregnancy which ended in a termination which she now regrets.

I think soaps like this are great for raising socail awareness of problems and it makes people who have problems more likely to be more open about them.

Overall I quite enjoy sitting down with a cuppa and watching eastenders for the 30 minutes that it is broad cast for. It is shown Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in the evenings on BBC one, it is also shown the same days at 10pm on BBC three, and the omnibus is shown on Sunday lunch times on BBC one.

Summary: Overall a better than average soap opera!

I remember choir practice finishing early so we could get home to watch the first episode!! Can't believe it's still going with so many showings a week. No wonder the actors do nothing else besides. Great review. Cutecandy
