Advantages: Definately a conversation starter the next day

Disadvantages: Can sometimes be a bit depressing if storyline concerns a serious issue.

I know time goes by so quickly these days but it's still hard to believe Eastenders will celebrate it's 25th anniversary next year. It started just on a tuesday and thursday night at 7.30pm but has gradually had episodes added during the week so now it's only a wednesday and saturday that you can't tune in to watch it.

Only one of the original cast is still appearing in the programme, Ian Beale. He's the sort of character you love to hate because he thinks he's one better than everyone else ( but he does have some funny moments when he gets his just deserts). Sadly one of the best actresses in Eastenders history passed away earlier this year, Wendy Richard. She played Pauline Fowler and was involved in some of the soap's toughest storylines like son Mark's HIV condition and the problems with her husband Arthur.

In fact Eastenders has dealt with quite a few rather sensitive issues. As well as HIV it has covered breast cancer, a gay muslim relationship and has been the first soap to have a whole episode dedicated to black characters and one featuring all women.

Over the years Eastenders has seen quite a few famous faces appear in it. Alongside Wendy Richard has been Barbara Windsor, Mike Reid, Martin Kemp, Ian Lavender and Phil Daniels among others. It also made stars like Tamsin Outhwaite, Martine McHutchenson, Ross Kemp and Gillian Taylforth.

For a programme which centres itself on the day to day life of everyday people who live in a square in London it's definately stood the test of time. It reguarly win awards and constantly has respectable viewing figures. It's now become one of the nation's favourite weeknight programmes. It definately gives me and my friends something to talk about at work the next day!!

Summary: A soap thst hss stood the test of time
