Eastenders

I have to admit that I used to watch this soap opera quite often though of late I have really started to avoid it. When it first started the storylines were new and exciting and the characters were well rounded and full of action and fun. It was fully believable and was dramatic without being over the top. These days it has, in my opinion, gone downhill.

The storylines have begun to repeat themselves with little success. Whilst years ago the self same storylines were new and never seen before, now they are simply old news. Yes, they are performed well in the main though it just seems as though the writers have little ideas. Occasionally a great storyline will pop its head out of the sand and bring my attention back though even then these storylines take forever to play out and seem never-ending which in the end just looses my attention. Obviously there are only so many storylines in the world that can be used unless they bring in something completely wrong for the show like aliens (though Phil Mitchell does come close!!) though it is their ways of portraying the storylines which fall short of being good.

The characters are a mixed bunch. There are some great actors though there are also some really average actors. The characters in themselves are vast and some very interesting though the storylines for many of them don't allow the character to grow enough and when they attempt to allow this they occasionally throw the wrong storylines at the wrong characters (with some great surprises here and there).

Overall, Eastenders appeals greatly to many people and often voted top soap of the year though in my opinion in the number of years it has been running it has simply gone from a great soap to a repetitive average show which has to bring back old (and often dead) characters to keep it alive.

One last thought;

Does no one in Eastenders own a washing machine?!?
