Disadvantages: Annoying characters, hopeless storylines

EASTENDERS was okay once; about 15 years ago maybe. For me the series had outstayed its welcome soon after the departure of Dirty Den. But my apathy has since turned into utter hatred, and a cold shiver goes down my spine every time that dreary theme music oozes out of a nearby television. I refuse to be in the same room when someone has it on; not out of stubbornness, but simply because I find it so unspeakably depressing. Yet still everyone who watches it insists on having it on at maximum volume, to the degree that I can often hear it from the street!

I cannot for the life of me see what is so entertaining about a group of dull, miserable East Londoners who spend their days alternately crying and squabbling. If these kind of individuals are so appealing, why don't we turn Deptford or Stepney into tourist attractions and people can go and sit in the launderettes and cafes there and watch the real thing?

It professes to raise serious issues, and have "everyone talking about it" as the BBC likes to say. Yet its only genuine cultural contribution has been the brief popularity with the British public of the phrase "RICKAAAYYY!"

EASTENDERS is overblown, humourless rubbish, and I want it to go away.
