Economy Gastronomy ... better than we've ever done before.

The show was on BBC2 between 8 and 9pm and the series recently ended, it was presented by Allegra McEvedy, the owner and creator of the Leon food chain with input from professional chef, Paul Merrett. At first I thought this was a great idea for a cookery show and looked forward to it enormously, the idea being that two professional chefs would visit a household and help them learn how to save money in their cooking. So far so good. However on watching one show and hearing a family of 6 indicate they spent £400 per week on food it struck me that reducing their food budget wasn't really a challenge at all, it would have been much better to help people who needed to reduce their food bills not these overpaid people who don't know how to spend their money. I haven't seen all of these, so bear with me if this sounds incomplete. The ones I have seen were mainly oriented around families, of which there was a wide spread of family types from the 'normal' husband, wife and kids set up to the single mum scenario and the last one I caught was a family where the parents were two men and a little girl. Hmmm, are we getting a sociological approach to this review? Well maybe. Anyway lets crack on. This show like many others is formatted and formulaic. We get to see how much each family spends on food We are then told they are spending too much. We are then told how much the ...  Read the complete review

I watched all of this series and found it very useful. The timing of the series was brilliant, my household (me, partner and 2 year-old) had just recently tried going back to cooking from scratch instead of using ready sauces, ready prepared foods, etc. Let's get the bad stuff out of the way first....not everything in this series will suit everyone. There is a different family situation in each episode, from students to people on a budget, and onto better-off people who are just overspending and wasting loads. However, I managed to take something from every episode. Especially the 'Bedrock' recipes, great idea. One base dish you start the week with ...  Read the complete review

Express Review on Economy Gastronomy

An awful and un realistic program. have just watched the episode where they try to save money for a group of student guys. the recipies are tasty but the ingredients are expensive and very time consuming!... not student orientated atall. they seem to have no idea of what students want and the short time they have or want to spend cooking. they also presume that every kitchen has every piece of equipment under the sun.. have they ever been in most student households? its so unrealistic. they have no useful tips for students only students that have lots of time and money. it really is a joke. they even suggest buying bottles of wine to cook with... thats hardly cooking with a budget is it!. as a student myself, this program taught me nothing and gave me no useful tips. back to the ready meals!

I have to say that I quite like this program. I have now seen two of the three episodes and their are many ideas that I like, particularly the idea of making a basic recipe that can be used as the basis for a number of other meals, like the basic mince recipie. It can be used for chillie, cottage pie and bollognaise. It was an idea that had just never occured to be before. I often make a chillie, but just make chillie. I would be better placed to make the basic mince recipie which would take the same amount of time and then extract enough for chillie and freeze the rest for later in the week. Sometimes it is the simple ideas that people miss. I am amazed ...  Read the complete review
