Advantages: Good soap with good characters
Disadvantages: Not as good as Corrie
Emmerdale is another soap we have on television in a prime time slot, it is set in Yorkshire (where I am from) and has been on our screens for many years. When it first started it was known as Emmerdale Farm, it first began in 1972 and was on twice a week in an afternoon slot. Now it is just Emmerdale and is broadcast five times a week.
I haven't always watched Emmerdale like I have Coronation Street because in the early days I think it was very boring. It was called Emmerdale Farm because the program and all it's action was based around a farm. The Sugdens were the main family of the soap and they ran the farm. Watching a program about a farm didn't really appeal to me so I never watched it.
However over the last ten years I think Emmerdale has reall improved and been brought up to date. The farm is still there and there is still two members of the Sugden family, Victoria and Andy, but they play a small part in a big soap. It really is good now and this is shown by the fact it is compared to Eastenders and Coronation Street at awards ceremonies.
I think the injection of young characters and the contempory storylines are what has improved the soap. There is now a balance between the old, such as Betty, Edna and Eric Pollard with the young, such as Debbie, Chastity and Katie.
The setting remains the same with Home Farm being the focal point with the latest rich family living there. The Woolpack pub is also a main part of the village and everyone seems to drink and meet up at the pub. There is also the post office and cafe both run by Viv and Bob Hope, and a factory run by Eric Pollard.
The Dingles are probably the largest and the most famous family of the soap, Zak and Lisa are the head of the family, but there are many other members, the Dingles keep cropping up all the time like an ever expanding family.
I do like Emmerdale, I don't think it is quite as good as Corrie and the storylines are a bit more tame but I do watch it when I'm in. It has come a long way since the days of Emmerdale Farm.
Summary: Probably the third best soap on TV

- 15/09/09 I think they should get rid of the Wilde family pronto, that is all except their youngest Will... he should then be adopted by the Dingles. I have fond memories of Emmerdale Farm days when it didn't just concentrate on the farm but the pub too, so it wasn't really just about a farm :-/ |
