Advantages: A change from town based soaps

Disadvantages: hammy acting

Shown on ITV and repeated on various other ITV channels, Emmerdale has been running for around 2 decades now. It is a soap opera set in the fictional town of emmerdale, in the yorkshire dales. The soap follows the trials and tribulations of the villagers.

The soap started out with a very country feel, there were constantly live animals used in the show and plot lines revolved around country issues, and as such the show was perceived as being more gentle than other major UK soaps such as the rather depressing Eastenders. These days, probably in an effort to raise its profile, the soap has resorted to more traditional soap plot lines, there is scandal around every corner and the wildlife aspect is now a token gesture.

The soap has many long standing characters and has a number of families that form the backbone of the soap, theres include the dingles, the kings and previously others such as the tates and the sugdens. As for the locations, it seems country life revolves around the pub, as the Woolpack is where the majority of the action takes place. Other main points of interest in the village are the post office cum cafe, the sewing factory and the vets.

Summary: Probably No. 3 of the Big 3 UK Soaps...

This has been called Emmerdale since 1989, but Emmerdale Farm actually started being shown way back in 1972! Sadly - I'm old enough to remember!!
