Advantages: ace acting, realistic

Disadvantages: gory

I’m the first to admit that I do enjoy a really good hospital drama and even though it’s American, ER is the best. Its been running now for nine years and still going strong.
It is shown on both Channel four and E4.

BACKGROUND
The show was created by Michael Crichton of Jurassic Park fame and is set in County hospital in Chicago. It follows the lives of the staff of the Emergency room and surgical department of the hospital.

THE CAST
The difference between ER and many other dramas is the cast changes, over each series some main characters leave and other ones appear yet it still maintains its superiority over other similar shows.
With the previous cast including such names as Julianna Marguiles (Carol Hathaway), Anthony Edwards (Mark Greene) and the gorgeous George Clooney (Doug Ross), the quality of acting has always been excellent.
The Lead characters at the moment are

JOHN CARTER: He is now Chief resident in the ER having worked his way up from a mere med student in the first series. He is from a very wealthy family and has had what you could call a very turbulent past. He has been disowned by his family for a while stabbed by a mental patient and developed a drug addiction. He is currently dating Abby Lockhart.

CARRIE WEAVER: Now the chief of staff Weaver is what you could call the bitch of the show. Always the stickler for the rules she has got everybody’s back up at sometime or another. She never really had much fun in her life living on her own, until recently when she came out as a lesbian and dated a female firefighter.

ABBY LOCKHART: She is the Nurse manager and came from what you could say was an unstable family with her mother (Sally Fields) and brother both diagnosed as having mental disorders. She got together with Carter after they both went to an AA meeting.

‘ROCKET’ ROMANO: He is now struggling to find his place in the hospital after
losing an arm due to a helicopter blade. He has also never really had much happiness in his life probably due to his awful temper and attitude. He isn’t in a relationship with anyone but still pines for Elizabeth Corday his fellow surgeon.

LUCA KOVAC: The resident Love doctor of the ER he has been out with Abby and numerous other nurses. His past is also important, his wife and children were killed back in croatia his home country, he has never really got over this experience.

There are of course many other characters and other supporting actors to consider:
Susan, Gallant, Chen, Pratt, Corday, Lilly, Jerry, Malik, Haleh, Lydia and many more. Celebrities have also played an important part in the series with names such as Ewan Mcgregor and Sally Fields appearing.

The hospital has never really been a safe place for the characters to workwith most of them ending up as patients at one time or another. With stabbings, chemical spills, madmen, epidemics and powercuts it really is a death sentence working there.

One of my favourites. Occasionally an episode is really confusing and disjointed, but this series is well worth persevering with until you get into it, and then you'll really get hooked, like me.

I've watched it a few times, mind you only when I was bored and there was nothing else on.
