Everybody hates Chris is an American sitcom based on the childhood experiences of Chris Rock. For those of you who do not know Chris Rock is a famous American comedian. He provides the narration for the programme.
The show is set in Brooklyn in the 1980's, in an african-american neighbourhood. The show involves Chris' life both at home and in school. At home, he is the eldest of 3 children with more responsiblity than his siblings. Added to this he has strict parents, all of which makes for a difficult time for Chris. His mum (Rochelle) is played by Tichina Arnold, and his dad (Julius) is played by Terry Crews. Their relationship is funny at times, although sometimes it is strained as they try hard to earn enough money to provide for their 3 children. Chris' brother Drew is played by Tequan Richmond, and his sister Tanya played by Imani Hakim. Inevitably, Chris seems to get in more trouble with his parents than his siblings, as he is the eldest.
At school he is the only black student in a school full of white students. This makes him automatically disliked by some students, particularly the school bully Joey Caruso. His teacher Mrs Morello consistently singles him out due to his skin colour, although she seemingly intends to be positive towards Chris. Greg (Vincent martella) is Chris' best friend at school, and is one of the only people who sees past his colour.
Every time something good happens in Chris' life, you can always be sure that by the end of the episode it will have turned round and backfired against him. This show is extremely funny, and unlike most other sitcoms, it does not use canned laughter to show you where they want something to be funny! The trials and tribulations of Chris' life are well directed and wrote to make them funnier than they would be, and the acting is great throughout.
Other recurring characters in the show include Mr Omar (Ernest Lee Thomas) who lives above Chris's family. He i a funeral director who often tries to take advantage of widowed women. Also of note is Doc (Antonio Fargas) who owns the shop at which Chris works. He is often a source knowledge and wisdom for Chris, offering advice when needed.
Overall, this is a great american sitcom, very funny and entertaining. Even if you don't usually like American sitcoms, I would give this a go as it definitely offers something different anything else on the market at the minute.
Summary: Great sitcom
