Advantages: Fun
Disadvantages: Unrealistic
I have been watching this program for a few years now (almost since it started), but even I could not have envisaged how stupid the plotlines could become. I always enjoyed watching this program because it seemed to take itself a lot less seriously than the likes of Eastenders, however this has gone to far to the other extreme. For those of you who don't watch Family Affairs, it is set in Stanley Street in Charnham and the plot revolves around the inhabitants of the aforementioned street. Family Affairs is shown at 6.30pm each evening on Channel 5 and each episdoe is repeated at 1.00pm the followinf day. Now Family Affairs has some very endearing characters and also some that people love to hate. The ultimate villan is Pete Callan, he is a murderer, wife beater and ex-drug dealer who is so cunning that he always walks free. Some of his storylines have been far from believable but they are always quite exciting to watch. Now i admit that TV is supposed to be escapism but I also think that soaps should be realistic to a certain extent so that people can relate to them. I used to love this program as I could relate to some of the characters in it, it has now developed into soemthing that is completely devoid of realism. It is still a good program to watch but it won't become as comulsive watching like other soaps as you can detatch yourself from it far too easily. In conclusion, Family Affairs is prbably worth a watch but is not worth staying in for or even recording.

- 25/04/02 I used to watch it regularly at one point but I just could not keep up with who was going out with who and characters come and go like passengers on a bus!
Family Affairs is great escapism but to gain a bigger following they need to make it more character led..
Great op! :) |
