Advantages: Hilarious stories

For a long time I decided not to even watch Family Guy. I considered myself a loyal and trustworthy Simpsons fan and I had always considered it to be an imposter to their televisual genius.

I sat down to watch an episode on BBC3 late one night when I couldn't sleep and now it is safe to say that I am really hooked!

I think...and forgive me here....I think it is BETTER than the Simpsons!

I love everything about the series I have watched so far. The characters are clearly defined and while there are obvious similarities with the Simpsons, there are also great twists ...such as the dog that talks and the baby that talks like a 1930's English gentleman (do they understand him though...I just don't know!).

The stories follow a familiar format - usually involving an incident or something that one of them has to do...it's all very familiar, what it does so well though is the use of the flash backs. Every episode is filled with them, referring to something in the past that has shaped the families future. It is very clever stuff.

The animation is very well done and it is sharp and snappy, the pace of the animation, keeps up with the dialogue and story demands. There are also great extras in the stories...such as the evil monkey...it is just too funny!

Like the Simpsons, quite a lot of the action takes place in a bar and there is also the news team, which is a familiar feature.

What I think really stands out about this though is the knowledge that it makes fun of itself and is happy to do so. This is what makes it special.

I was surprised to learn that the series had been dropped until the demand for DVDs was said to have been massive! Well done to them for bringing it back.

If you enjoy sarcastic babies, dogs that date women and sex mad parents...this is the series for you.
