Advantages: Great characters and great jokes
Disadvantages: Not for kids
Family Guy is an adult cartoon created by Seth McFarlane. At the time of writing it has broadcast in the UK for 7 seasons - you can catch on BBC Three and FX.
Family Guy debuted on the Fox network in the US in 1999 and has actually been cancelled twice - only to return to TV due to strong DVD sales.
The show revolves around the Griffins, a suburban American family. Peter and Lois Griffin are husband and wife who have 3 children: Chris, Meg and baby Stewie. The family is completed by Brian, a talking alcoholic dog.
Peter Griffin:
Peter is the head of the household and the family's money-earner, working at the local Pawtucket Brewery. He likes a drink with his friends in the Clam after work and doesn't get along very well with his in-laws (does anybody?).
Lois Griffin:
Lois is the lady of the house and comes from a rich family (who think she's too good for Peter). She spends her days looking after the Stewie.
Chris Griffin:
Chris is the Griffin's eldest son, he's not particularly smart and is haunted by the evil monkey living in his closet. He earns money by doing a paper round where he has attracted the attentions of the neighbourhood's local pedophile.
Meg Griffin:
Meg is the Griffin's only daughter and is the child they wish they didn't have. She's seen as ugly and useless and is often the butt of the family's jokes.
Stewie Griffin:
Stewie is the baby of the family who's hell-bent on world domination. He spends his time thinking up ways to kill Lois and take over the world. He speaks to Brian, but it's still a bit of a mystery as to whether anybody else understands him.
Brian Griffin:
Brian is the family dog, but speaks, acts and lives as a human. A borderline alcoholic, he's had relationships with several women on the show, but none have quite matched his intelligence levels. Brian's currently writing a novel...
The Griffins are supported by a small background cast, who mainly live in the same street as them.
Joe Swanson:
Joe is a wheelchair-bound supercop who lives next door to the Griffins. He's often the butt of jokes about his wheelchair.
Glenn Quagmire:
Quagmire is a sex-obsessed airline pilot who lives a couple of doors down. He often makes dirty jokes.
Cleveland Brown:
Cleveland also lives on the same street as the Griffins. Recently separated from his wife, he's now on the look-out for a new gal.
Episodes revolve around the goings-on of the characters mentioned above. Often the storylines are somewhat far-fetched and non-sensical, but that only serves to make the show more interesting and the jokes funnier.
Be warned though that despite it being animated, Family Guy is not for kids - the storylines are very adult and there will sometimes be swearing included, especially in the more recent episodes. Some of the jokes can also be offensive... to the disabled, Christians, blacks, gays... you name them, Family Guy has offended them!
But if you can take the jokes, there's no better show on TV at the minute!
Summary: Fantastic humour - the best animated show on TV
