Fat FriendsNewest Review: ... side of eating disorders in favour of simplification and dramatic impact. Despite being a ratings hit, ‘Fat Friends’ is completely unchallenging. The character development is quite two-dimensional, which is partly due to the difficulty in exploring anyone but the main character in each episode. The acting can also be patchy, especially for the incidental one-off characters. For example, Lisa Riley’s bully was played by an actress who must have looked to ‘Acorn Antiques’ Trixie Trouble for the inspiration to play her ‘character’... And whilst this is ITV drama, rendering any kind of believabil... more |

ITV used to be the bastion of entertainment. Whilst never cutting edge, their serial dramas like ‘London’s Burning’ and ‘Inspector Morse’ were always well-written and popular if perhaps unchallenging and stretching credibility. However, ITV have recently been stooping so low, they’re in danger of crashing onto the floor. ‘Britain’s Sexiest’ epitomised everything that’s wrong television in this decade with its tackiness and desperate attempts at titillation, whilst everything else seems to be dumbing down. One jewel in ITV’s damaged crown is ‘Fat Friends’, which was created ... Read the complete review

A comedy drama along the lines of “Cold feet”, “Playing the field” and “Real women”. I’ve only just finished watching it on video, and am now eagerly awaiting the repeats. The female characters in particular are realistic, and it’s not out and out funny – rather touchingly amusing, as well as having a serious side. At all revolves around a slimming club, and my friends who have been to this kind of thing tell me it’s spot on. The condescending (and slim) leader, the plugging of expensive food products, and recipe books, and of course the group humiliation. Not all the characters are fat, or need to be ... Based around a slimming club called Super slimmers whose leader is known as Stick insect by the members, Fat friends is a hilarious tale of a group of people trying to lose weight. It also is tinged with sadness at times at the way people who are overweight are treated by others such as the teenage boy in the show who was beaten up by bullies for being fat and then took an overdose because of this. The characters are very funny and there are plenty of wisecracks made during this hour long programme as they go about there everyday life before meeting up at the weekly class and being frowned upon by Stick insect who preaches to them about how many units they should be ... I love it! I'm not particularly overweight, although I would like to lose about a stone especially having just had a baby. I think it's great that not only does this programme cover the overweight issue but it covers all the other issues that come with being overweight. My sister is very overweight and it causes her great distress,I've even been to classes with her to encourage her. Many people who are overweight give the impression that they are happy go lucky, but knowing how my sister feels, it's the opposite. Many are depressed, lonely, desperate to be liked or to fit in. Where did we get the ability to look down our noses ... Read the complete review

When I saw the advert for this show I didn't think it would be a show I would end up liking but just after watching an episode I was pleasently surprised. I'm not a great fan of ITV's drama or comedy series's but this one is an exception. This episode mostly focused on Jamie and overweight schoolboy who was bullied for being overweight. He lived with his mother who relied on him for almost everything. She was clearly depressed and Jamie was forced to take away her pills to stop her taking an overdose. He basically took care of her and she wouldn't have much of a future without him. We see how the bullying affects Jamie and it comes to a point ... Read the complete review
