Advantages: A classic - will be around forever, Full to busting with laughs
Disadvantages: None
Fawlty towers is not the newest of comedies, it comes from the writing partnership of John Cleese (Monty Python) and his (then) wife Connie Booth. It follows the exploits of a hapless Hotel owner in Torquay, always trying to better himself, often rude to his guests and his wife, penny pinching and generally neurotic. Only 12 episodes of this show were ever made, they are classics which most people, over the age of about 13, would recognise. There were catchphrases which came out of Fawlty towers which are still in use today. The Characters: --------------- Basil Fawlty - Hotel owner and lunatic! Polly - Maid at the hotel, gets a lot of responsibility placed on her shoulders and does not like to work for Basil. Manuel - Spanish waiter, his catchphrase "Que?" has struch a chord with the public of the UK and can still be heard today. He never quite gets it, the language barrier is so huge that he often has to ask again and often gets a good slap from Basil for his uselessness. The type of bloke you would not like to have on your staff nor have serving you breakfast. Cybil - Basils long suffering wife. They've been together 15 years and apparently hate each other. She talks on the phone constantly, "Ooh I know" comes out of her mouth more than anything else. Other characters - The Major: Oldest resident, Terry: Cook, Dr Price: crops up in a couple of episodes, resident. There are others who come and go but I've listed the most important ones. My View: -------- Fawlty towers is a classic, it gets better each time you watch it. From Basil's crazed attacks on his car and his staff to Manuel's useless attempts to be understood, there is a great deal of comedy in each episode. The Germans - possibly the most famous of all the Fawlty Towers episodes, coined the phrase "don't mention the war." If you haven't seen th
em, get on to UK Gold and have a watch, the videos are only £8 each and are well worth the cash. I'd reccomend thuis series to those who like to watch slightly surreal comedy with a lot of nutty moments. Great viewing. P.S. - "I think I mentioned it once there but I think I got away with it!" Basil Fawlty, after telling a group of German holiday makers that they started it! Great!
