Advantages: Genuinely tests viewers’ general knowledge.

Disadvantages: Occasional lack of atmosphere can prove to be mind-numbing.

They’ve jazzed up the theme tune but the programme remains essentially the same. Which is pretty much what you expect.

The show isn’t necessarily about the contestants but really the interaction between us and the host. This is less demanding but far more accessible than the pretentious University Challenge and any element of tactics (as seen on other fare such as The Weakest Link) are askewly removed, to allow us viewers a chance to test our knowledge as much as they do with the participants. As well as having for it’s host, the affable William G. Stewart who is arguably one of the most effective hosts around.

Of which makes it, in my view, far more essential than it’s following show, the eponymous Countdown.
