Advantages: keep abreast with the latest film news
Disadvantages: occasional celebrations are dull
WHAT IS IT ABOUT:
Jonathan Ross hosts a TV show all about the latest buzz in the film industry. Each show, he gives an in-depth analysis of some of the new releases, and interviews actors, directors and writers about their work.
IS IT ANY GOOD:
It's interesting to see Ross in a totally serious role, and it took me a while to come to a place where I could take him seriously, but I am glad that I got there in the end. For a film lover, this show is invaluable, in that it keeps you abreast with the latest news from the industry.
As a film critic, Ross regularly has a negative view on the films he critiques, and this leaves me wondering just what has to happen for him to praise one. He clearly likes the independent films, and is more positive towards these, but his overall negativity is a tad depressing at times. This is particularly odd when he interviews the star of a film, and sucks up to them, only to criticise the movie after. This was evident when he interview Keifer Sutherland about his film 'Mirrors'. Ross was, as always with big stars, all over him for the interview, then get him back in the studio and he's ultra critical.
The film is very adult and mature in nature, and does little to appeal to a younger audience, but for adults who love films, it's the show to watch.
Occasionally, the show will 'celebrate' the career of an actor or director, and often these segments are boring with a capital B. These stars often began their careers in the 50s and 60s, long before I was born, and I have to say that they should save this sort of thing for an episode of 'This is Your Life'.
IF YOU LIKED IT:
The website IMDB.com is an excellent online resource for films, and contains daily updated info on the industry.
IN CONCLUSION:
A serious and occasionally dull show that remains an invaluable resource on the film industry.
Summary: watch it
