Foyles War

Description: An ITV drama series featuring policeman DCS Christopher Foyle during WW11. Premiered: October 27, 2002

Newest Review: ... of the second World War and deals with a provincial police force trying to cope with domestic crime as war rages over Europe. This gives the programme a deep well of story-lines different from any other mystery drama currently available. Stories revolve around themes such as war profiteering, Nazi sympathisers, shell-shock, women's role in the war effort and conscientious objectors to name ... more

Premium Review Foyles War: What is it good for? Quite a bit as it happens. (521 words)

Foyles War is part of that ever-expanding genre of crime drama. As with all these programmes, the plot hinges on its lead detective, the eponymous Christopher Foyle. The majority of these programmes' characters rely on a quirk, troubled mind, vice, or maverick approach so which of these does Foyle display? The answer, to be honest, is none of them. O.K, so he is a widower with a reserved manner who had a slight run-in with the Intelligence Service in series one, but none of these amount to the compelling flaws we are used to with our detectives. Then what is it that gives Foyles War its appeal? The answer for me has to be the setting, the series span ...  Read the complete review

This ITV drama can be quite entertaining which is not something often said about ITV drama these days afer the highs of shows like Morse in fact in many ways this can be seen as an attempt to replace Morse and it does a pretty good job. Set during world war two with Michael Kitchen in the lead role of Detective Chief Superintendent Foyle who is based in Hastings. Most of the cases are war related in that they deal with black market activities and smuggling as well as the odd murder. Like many similar characters Foyle is rather under stated but very effective, he has two main assistants played by Anthony Howell and the appalingly names Honeysuckle Weeks (I see ...  Read the complete review

I cannot praise this series enough ! Coupled with Anthony Horowitz's great writing and Michael Kitchen's superb acting - this is a 'must' for those who like top-quality British television dramas. The series is set in world war two and Michael Kitchen (Foyle) is a detective who solves crimes in Hastings. I watches a great programme on the History Channel which focused on the amount of crime which took place during the war - fascinating..... So Foyle could be involved in dodgy rationing and counterfeit passports to murders - there is usually more than one storyline in the two hour programme and there are twists and turns which can be ...  Read the complete review

Another series of "Foyle's War" ran on ITV1 earlier in the year. Hallelujah! Joy unconfined! So do I like it? No, I love it. Me, a hater of series (get bored after a couple of episodes), soaps (facile characters and story-line) and reality TV (expletive deleted). I regard the box as a purveyor of films and sport, and possibly of news in times of crisis and disaster. Even stranger, as this is a police detective series, I'm not a fan of this genre either. Agatha Christie is all plot and no character; Morse is too studiedly élitist - or at least his creator is. So wherein lies the appeal of this one? A world war 2 setting for a police series ...  Read the complete review
