This ITV drama can be quite entertaining which is not something often said about ITV drama these days afer the highs of shows like Morse in fact in many ways this can be seen as an attempt to replace Morse and it does a pretty good job.
Set during world war two with Michael Kitchen in the lead role of Detective Chief Superintendent Foyle who is based in Hastings. Most of the cases are war related in that they deal with black market activities and smuggling as well as the odd murder. Like many similar characters Foyle is rather under stated but very effective, he has two main assistants played by Anthony Howell and the appalingly names Honeysuckle Weeks (I see sixties hippy parents in her past).
Like the Morse character Foyle is single having been widowed however an under lying thread throughout the episodes is the existence of his son who is in the RAF.
I do like this period drama, the scenery is very realistic and it is well put together with some interesting plot lines and gives an insight into a part of the war that is not always focused on, the fact that even in a time of great risk to the country there are those selfish individuals who are out for personal gain and there are those left behind from the fighting who have an important role to play.
Kitchen in the lead role is a comsumate actor and does an excellent job of portraying the steely determination of Foyle who is often under pressure from the authorities and the military to stop his investigations. Definately a show worth watching.
Summary: Good period drama
