This American comedy stars Kelsey Grammer as Dr Fraser Crane a psychiatrist who has a radio show. The character was first featured in the Boston based comedy called Cheers where he was one of the regulars of the show which starred Ted Danson. Alongside his brother Niles a fellow psychiatrist Fraser lives in Seattle with his invalided father and his Dads dog, Eddie, as well as a physiotherapist for his father called Daphne.

The character of Fraser is rather pompous and aloof as is his brother Niles who is very snobbish while the father is more down to earth and a retired police officer who was shot in the line of duty.

Fundamentally this comedy plays on a sort of class divide however the divide is within the family structure, both of the brothers are very snobbish appreciating fine wine and the arts while the other characters around them appreciate beer and sports. The arrogance of the two and the ridicule that they bring upon themselves is central to the humour which is sharp and very well delivered as the cast are excellent in their roles.

The show is no longer being made so it is only repeats these days. For me the funniest moments are between Niles and Daphne on whome he has a massive crush despite being married to the wealthy Marris who is never actually seen in the show. Like most American comedies such as Friends and Scrubs there is this element of will they won't they get together running through the show with Daphne being unaware of Niles infatuation.

This is a classy comedy with some excellent characters, the scenes split between Frasers home, the radio station and a coffee bar which means that a number of characters are involved with Frasers work producer Ross who is a bit of a tramp getting some great lines.

Currently you ca find this show on Paramount and occasionally it is repeated on C4.

Summary: American comedy
