Advantages: funny, clever, well-observed, much character and plot development, original
Disadvantages: bit of a mainstream format.
Frasier is the most successful spin-off of all time, and follows the hilarious exploits of ex Cheers regular Dr. Frasier Crane. The show embodies some brilliantly highbrow humour and very cleverly written farce, presented in a mainstream sitcom canned-laughter format.
Since Cheers, Dr. Frasier Crane has moved from Boston to Seattle, where he has become a professional radio shrink and something of a celebrity and local socialite. His aging father has moved in with him, who is far less of an upper-crust snob, and more of a regular Joe, leading to some very well-observed clashes of personalities.
Frasier is frequently visited by his brother, Niles, another practicing local psychiatrist. Both embody almost all of the neuroses and insecurities their profession attempts to combat. Niles, a happily married, yet hapless man is in love with Frasier's charming Mancunian housekeeper, Daphne Moon.
The show has now finished, but ran for 13 long and successful series, making much room for character and plot development. Minor characters moving into more prominent roles, and main characters being pushed into the background. Frasier is showed on Paramount Comedy (Now Comedy Central) 1, 2 and Extra, and the entire series is available on DVD, albeit rather overpriced. Overall this is one of the best sitcoms on television. Funny, clever, farcical, well-observed and very, very witty. I strongly recommend this to anyone who fancies something a little less lowbrow than shows like Two and a Half Men and King of Queens.
Summary: A brilliantly witty sitcom.
