Advantages: Great guests

Disadvantages: Some guests are getting a bit boring

I was amazed when looking up when Friday Night With Jonathan Ross was first shown on the BBC to find that its only been on since 2001. It seems like its been on forever.

Since the departure of our screens of Parkinson there was a massive void left for a real talk show, one with great guests and interviews that were not just pandering to the celebrities that are on the shows. I think of Graeme Norton when i say this.

Along comes Jonathan Ross to fill the void. Ross has long been on our screens and his radio 2 show is a long runner too so he seemed a obvious choice to fill the slot left by Parky.

The Show is broadcast usually at 10:45pm on a Friday night and is repeated later on a Saturday night. It has a simple format more like the great talk show in America like Leno and Letterman. There are usually 3 guests and a musical segment at the end.

Like all of these types of talk shows the guests are always on to plug something or other and thats just the way it is, but i think because the way Ross laughs with them, charms them they tend to talk more openly than they would do normally on other shows. The guests that Ross gets on the show are brilliant, normally its three guests will include some homegrown talent and two international stars.

I suppose Jonathan Ross is like marmite in that you either love or hate him, i side with the love him camp. I find his humour and wit extrememly clever and very sharp and he has a way of making his guests feel comfortable and thus get the most out of the interviews. His little segments at the beginning and inbetween guests are always very funny topical and sometime a little controversial but thats why we love JR. He normally has exceptional music taste so the bands he gets on are normally of the highest order.

Over the years both Jonathan Ross and the show have picked up a multitude of awards and it keeps going strong and is yet to get tired.

Although this is regular viewing for me i do however have a couple of issues with the show and they are mainly down to its repetitiveness and the fact that in each run of shows you can pretty much guess half of the people Ross will have on the show regardless if they have done anything or not. Each series no doubt will have on Jack Dee, Ricky Gervais, Take That, Matt Lucas & David Wallliams, Catherine Tate and Mitchell and Webb, this is because they are all close friends of Ross's. Now i have no problem with these people in general (apart from Catherine Tate and the Little Britian people) but its just a bit dull to have the same people on each series.

Overall this is the best we have and Jonathan Ross does a great job with the show, so im glad the BBC stopped being so silly over the controversy surrounding the infamous JR radio broadcast with Russell Brand recently and put him back on our screen to make us laugh each week.

Summary: Good balance of comedy, interviews and music

Fab review- so true about predicting the guests. Maybe that should be a game on skybet?

I love him - even the special he did with Streisand was fantastic. 2001 doesn't seem all that long ago but has been 8 years already!
