Advantages: Some sharp one liners
Disadvantages: Went on too long
Friends was one of the biggest US comedy imports to cross over the North Atlantic and you can still see endless re-runs on E4 if you have somehow missed out. Like most American sitcoms it tends to have some sort of constant story line running through it and it centres on the lives of six New Yorkers who congregate around a coffee shop and crack one liners. It made big stars out of the cast members and you can expect a movie spin off some time soon.
Museum dinosaur freak Ross (David Schwimmer) and control freak Monica ( Courtney Cox) are brother and sister, Monica lives with spoilt old school friend Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) who Ross has a crush on since childhood. Opposite Monica and Rachel lives Chandler ( Matthew Perry) who is Ross neurotic best friend from university and he lives with struggling actor and womaniser Joey ( Matt Le Blanc) while finally the odd one out is oddball Pheobe ( Lisa Kudrow). What a comprehensive summary I just did.
This is nice safe comedy without any real edge to it. The writing is pretty good however you have to accept a rather soppy side to it as the on off romance between Ross and Rachel unwinds. As the show became more popular so the special guest appearences started up with Aniston then love interest Brad Pitt doing a rather tongue in cheek performance, later on he was to do a far better tongue in cheek performance with Angelina Jolie the lucky bar stool.
Overall a fairly safe comedy that had an appeal for a while as far as I'm concerned but then carried on too long and got boring to the point where I stopped caring and stopped watching.
