Advantages: Excellent characters, brilliant storylines

Friends is a US sitcom, set in New York and following the lives of its six main characters. First aired in 1994, it essentially catapulted the main cast into the public eye; those actors being Jennifer Anniston (Rachel), Courteney Cox (Monica), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe), Matt LeBlanc (Joey), Matthew Perry (Chandler) and David Schwimmer (Ross).

The show followed these characters' lives in their homes, at work and hanging out at 'Central Perk', a fictional coffee shop. There were several ongoing story lines that continued right from the very beginning through to the end, the most notable being whether or not Rachel and Ross would end up together! Having said that, you can easily dip in and out, as each episode can be watched and understood without having seen previous episodes. Each episode title begins with "The One With..." and die-hard Friends fans can easily give you an episode description from each episode title!

The characters are all linked in some way or another and their backgrounds were gradually revealed over time through 'flashback' episodes. We know very early on that Ross and Monica are brother and sister, that Ross has been in love with Rachel since High School and that Phoebe is a little loopy! Over time, the characters continued to develop and we see some characters get married, some characters dating each other (I'm not going to give details in case you haven't seen it!)! All of this with a host of snappy, funny lines and endearing moments made Friends totally unmissable!

The show finally came to an end after ten seasons in 2004 and was watched by 52.5 million viewers! Re-runs are shown on E4 pretty much every day and it's amazing how many times you can watch the episodes over and over again without them getting old. If you haven't seen Friends yet, you MUST give it a go - and I bet you'll be watching those re-runs for a long, long time!
