Advantages: A light hearted comedy that is perfect for unwinding to.
Disadvantages: None, the worry that it could eventually go stale.
I hope that you are sitting comfortably, with a nice cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit or two close to hand. If you haven’t then go on and I will wait for you to come back .............. ready, then I will begin. ‘Friends’ is an American sit-com, that has been on our screens since 1994 and is currently in its seventh year. At the moment, the new series is being shown on Sky’s E4 on a Thursday night at 9pm and previous episodes can be seen on Sky 1 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday’s at 6pm and also on Channel 4 on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday at 6pm and Friday’s at 6.30pm and 9pm. It is set in New York and revolves around six, twenty-something friends and their lives. Three guys: - Chandler Bing - (the effeminate one) Ross Geller - (the Square/Stick in the Mud) Joey Tribbiani - (the Italian Stallion, dark and handsome, and definitely a ladies man!) And also three girls: - Rachel Green - (naive, never before had to work before in her life) Monica Geller - (very obsessive and likes to dominate people with her ways) Phoebe Buffay - (eccentric blonde). Some of the information used has come from the 'Friends' website - www.friendsontv.co.uk It was created and produced by Marta Kauffman and David Crane - they have been writing partners for over twenty years. The executive producer is Kevin Bright who began his relationship with Kauffman and Crane in 1989. In 1993 he went into partnership with them to form Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions and began a deal with Warner Bros. Television, where they have gone on to produce the comedy series ‘Friends’ and ‘Veronica’s Closet’ For anyone that hasn’t watched an episode of ‘Friends’ then where have you been? As I said previously the series focuses around six very different people, with plenty of humour and witticisms thrown
in for good measure. It is filmed in front of a live studio audience to make sure that the ‘one liners’ etc do actually get a laugh, if not then the script is changed until they do get a laugh. The main of the series is filmed in either of the friend‘s two apartments, which over the years have been shared one way or another by the friends, or it is also filmed in ‘Central Perk’, which is the local coffee shop. Over the years of ‘Friends’ there has been an increasing amount of guest appearances by many celebrities i.e. Bruce Willis, Elle MacPherson, Robin Williams, Julia Roberts, Jean-Claude Van Damme and George Clooney to name but a few. All eager to star in an episode of Friends, maybe because of the huge cult following that it seems to be accumulating. The stars and their characters ===================== Jennifer Aniston - Rachel Green -------------------------------------- Recently Jennifer Aniston broke many a heart by marrying one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors - Brad Pitt. She has starred in many films, which include - ‘The Object of my Affection’ and ‘Picture Perfect‘. Jennifer was also responsible for the very famous ‘Rachel’ haircut that was a definite must have, a few years ago. The character that she portrays in ‘Friends’ is Rachel Green - a pampered New Yorker that is trying to embark on an independent life after leaving her fiance, Barry the orthodontist, at the alter. At the beginning Rachel considered that being independent meant that she could still rely on using her father’s credit card whenever she wanted!! Her first job was being a waitress in ’Central Perk’ and was not a very good waitress at that. She then progressed to being an assistant in a large department store, and then became a personal shopper, where she developed a crush on one of her clients -
Joshua. Currently she is a buyer, and has a male assistant to help her. Hired purely because he was young, good looking and Rachel fancied him. Past romances in the series have included Paco, Joshua and Ross. The Ross and Rachel saga has been an ongoing saga for many a series, they eventually did get together, until one day when they had an argument and they were on a break - Ross slept with someone else and naturally Rachel found out. They never did really get back together after this, but did foolishly get married in Vegas after getting very, very drunk, they have since got divorced. Currently she is lusting after her toy boy personal assistant. Courtney Cox-Arquette plays Monica Geller ---------------------------------------------- ------ Courtney Cox-Arquette has previously starred in ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective’ and also the ‘Scream’ movies, as well as various other films and TV appearances. She plays Monica Geller, who was once a very overweight schoolgirl, who has since lost alot of weight. She is now a chef and is compulsively tidy. She likes to dominate people into doing things her way, as she likes everything to be done just right. Her brother is Ross Geller - who is favoured considerably by her parents, and all that she gets is alot of criticism from them. Her long time love is Richard; played by the gorgeous Tom Selleck (drool!), who is alot older than she is. They spilt up because naturally one day she would like to have children, whereas he has already been there and done that, and so doesn’t wish to go through it all again. After keeping it a secret for a long time, the news that Monica had eventually got together with her best friend - Chandler, gradually spread to the all the other friends. Monica and Chandler eventually got engaged, after abit of competition from Richard, who briefly came back on the scene, but the best man won - Chandler. They are cur
rently in the process of planning their wedding. Lisa Kudrow - Phoebe Buffay ---------------------------------------- In 1998 Lisa Kudrow won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and has many films to her credit, including ‘Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion‘, as well as many TV and theatre performances to her name. Lisa brilliantly portrays Phoebe, a woman who you wonder sometimes if she is even on the same planet as everyone else, as she can be quite wacky at times. She was previously a vegetarian, that was until she became pregnant with triplets, that she was having for her younger half-brother and his older wife, as they couldn’t have children. She is into aromatherapy and gives people massages. She has had various relationships with men, one a Police Officer, after she ‘borrowed’ his badge and pretended to be a Police Officer with it!! Phoebe also has an identical twin sister and has been searching for other family members. Matt Le Blanc - Joey Tribbiani ------------------------------------ Before starring in ‘Friends’, Matt Le Blanc starred in many big-budget commercials for Levi’s 501, Coke and Doritos. He has also starred in many theatrical productions - ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ and films including ‘Lost in Space’ and ‘Don West’. Matt is a natural at portraying Joey Tribianni, an out of work actor - whose claim to fame is playing Dr. Drake Ramoray in ’Days of our lives’, but is mostly out of work than in. His role model is Al Pacino. Joey would rather be chasing women, than doing anything constructive. He is a real ladies man, his famous chat up line is ’Hey, how are YOU doing’, and has had more conquests than Peter Stringfellow!! Matthew Perry - Chandler Bing --------------------------------
----- Matthew Perry has many television and film credits to his name, including ‘Fools Rush In’, Three to Tango’ and ‘She’s Out of Control’, and recently there has been alot of speculation about his health, as he had various stays in hospital, the speculation has included drug/alcohol abuse, but has been put down to liver trouble? The character that Matthew Perry plays is Chandler Bing, whom is a very effeminate character. He works in an office and his co-workers all think that he is gay. His all time love affair before getting together with Monica, was with Janice - and her hideous laugh. When it didn’t work out Chandler got quite depressed about it. Chandler first got together with Monica in London, when they were there attending her brothers wedding to Emily, and it was kept a secret for a long time before the other ‘Friends’ gradually found out one by one. David Schwimmer - Ross Geller -------------------------------------- In the debut season of 1994-1995 of Friends, David Schwimmer’s performance of Ross, a sensitive, hopeless romantic, earned him an Emmy Award nomination as outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series. After graduating from high school, he received a B. S. degree in Speech/Theatre. He has a passion for the Theatre, and along with seven other graduates founded Chicago’s ‘Lookingglass Theatre Company. It currently has twenty members, which are made up of actors; writers, directors and designers, all dedicated to creating new works for the American Stage. He has made many television appearances, including roles in NYPD Blue, L.A. Law and ‘The Wonder Years’. His film credits include ‘6 Days, 7 Nights’, ‘Kissing a Fool’ and ‘The Pallbearer’. The character that David Schwimmer portrays is Ross Geller - Monica’s brother. His character is abit conservati
ve and currently his character is a lecturer in a Dinosaur museum, and so likes to bore anyone that will listen with his knowledge of ’bones’. He was married until his wife, Carole turned into a lesbian, and that was before she discovered she was pregnant with her ex husband’s child. She eventually had a boy - Ben who is brought up by her and her lesbian lover, Susan. Ross has had a crush on Rachel since school, and was in heaven when they finally got together. Unfortunately after a bad argument, Ross ended up sleeping with someone else, only after insisting that they were on a break! Rachel couldn’t forgive him for this. After his romance with Rachel, he got together with Emily (Helen Baxendale) from London, and they decided to get married in London, when Rachel finally admitted to herself that she still had feelings for Ross decided to chase after him and followed him to London to confess her feelings to him. Although she never did tell Ross, - during Ross and Emily’s wedding vows, he accidentally called Emily - Rachel. They did continue to get married, but Emily insisted that he have no further contact with Rachel, which he couldn’t do and so they got divorced. Also after a very drunken night in Vegas, Ross and Rachel ended up getting married, because of the influence of alcohol, but have since got divorced. Since then, he has had various relationships one with a student at one of his lectures. I personally love ‘Friends’, it is just perfect to watch and unwind to. It has been running for quite a while now and it is worrying whether it will always remain as funny as it first was, as all good things I’m disappointed to say - do come to an end. After the big Ross and Rachel thing, it did begin to lose it’s funniness and appeal, but I’m glad to say that the current series is just as funny as the first - long may it reign!! For anyone t
