Advantages: Hugh and Laurie at their very best.
Disadvantages: Some weak sketches during each half hour programme.
Steve Fry and Hugh Laurie have starred in many classic comedy series and films, including the superb "Jeeves and Wooster" ITV Series, based on the PG Wodehouse books, both actors playing their charcters in only a way they could play them. However, in my opinion, the brief series of BBC2 programmes entitled "A Bit of Fry and Laurie" were the best canvas on which they were given to express and perform their ideas. The comedy partnership which they enjoy, really did shine out in this series of sketches. There were also script books published, which would be very useful if the BBC ever felt inclined to repeat the series. The sketches followed on from week to week, insterspersed by "Vox Pops", which involved Fry and Laurie in a multitude of wigs and costumes, being interviewed on irrelavent subjects. Each programme ended with Laurie at the piano, and Fry mixing cocktails, ending with the catchprase "Soupy Twist" - the concoctions getting more elaborate as the series progressed. Laurie's helium-inhaled version of "Let It Be" is rib-splitting, as is the p***-take of Richard Whitely's CountDown. Let's hope the BBC repeat this series sometime, its worth a watch!

- 28/07/00 I agree completely - although the last series (cannot remember if it was 3 or 4) did drop off a bit.
A very treasured possession of mine - a copy of Making History signed by S.Fry with the words "Soupy Twist"! |
